Celebration!

Apparently Morsi was a huge enough douche that the entire country is celebrating his ouster. With fireworks and ****.

Fearing that Washington's most important Arab ally would descend into chaos, U.S. officials said they are urging Morsi to take immediate steps to address opposition grievances, telling the protesters to remain peaceful and reminding the army that a coup could have consequences for the massive American military aid package it receives. The officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak publicly.

I love this. There's an Islamist douchebag the people don't want, the military removes him because he won't meet the demands of the protestors, does so while mostly avoiding bloodshed, and in the interim puts, not a general but their Chief Justice in charge and.. we're worrying about suspending aid? How about.. don't give military aid to Islamist douchebags in the first place?

The whole situation is Fed up and we're pretty much inevitably going to end up with egg on our face.

We are very closely tied to their military. Many of their officers come here to train. This goes back quite a while.

So, we supported Egypt when they had a dictator. We then supported their "revolution", and transition to democracy. They elected someone we did not like at all. We supported him anyway. Then the people decided he sucks, and pushed the military into a coup. Normally, we hate that ****. But, we didn't like their elected leader anyway. And the people want the coup. And... ****.

Isn't part of the problem that they DID want him? I thought it was record voter turn out and a VERY clear majority vote for him?

Now, there may very well be a lot of buyer's remorse going on, but hopefully that will lead to a more informed vote next time.

It was a choice between two guys the military picked and the outcome was 51.5 vs 48.5%.

Ah, I wasn't aware it was that close, or that the military had limited the choices.

I'm not aware that the military limited the choices. During the election there were the following choices. A candidate the represented the old regime (highly organized), Muslim Brotherhood (highly organized), democratic revolutionaries (unorganized and not unified). The democratic candidates split over 50% of the vote between them, none of them garnering enough votes on their own to make it to the runoff election. So the choice ended up being between a Muslim Brotherhood guy, and an old regime guy.

In a large part it's what Aegenor said; they had the choice of "Islamist douchebag" and "even more of an Islamist douchebag". People in parts of the world where they're first having elections really don't know of anything beyond "pick a candidate and vote". It's really isn't like the U.S. where if you vote for a guy and then don't like him it's your own fault; in these countries they think "oh, we got the vote, now we have freedom and democracy just like the West." The association between the vote and allt he other freedoms you're supposed to have along with it really isn't there. While educated and intelligent Egyptians with exposure to more of the West may intellectually grasp this, the average person doesn't because it has never been like that there. It is not the way they, their parents, or grandparents grew up; they know about the west only through the lens of their own culture, and the mental leap is just very very hard to make.

Random picture, because I'm hoping things go well in Egypt.

Now al qaeda has called for jihad and sharia law while throwing people off roofs.
