Scientists at UMass Medical School are the first to establish that a naturally
occurring X chromosome “off switch” can be rerouted to neutralize the extra
chromosome responsible for trisomy 21, also known as Down syndrome,
a genetic disorder characterized by cognitive impairment.

I fear I disagree; that's terrifyingly frightening news. I am decidedly not comfortable with gene manipulation of that variety.

The lack of humility before nature being displayed here staggers me. Genetic power is the most awesome force the planet has ever seen, but you wield it like a kid that's found his dad's gun. Your scientists were so preoccupied with whether they could that they didn't stop to think if they should.

Quote I can't quite place notwithstanding, I'm not sure I totally get the objections. I understand the fears of where we could go once we start manipulating genetics, but all technology has those kind of fears associated with it. Also the concept of Eugenics has been around a lot longer than our ability to even consider manipulating genomes.

Exciting research.

Definitely needs a lot of oversight, but very exciting.

Alright, since no one else is apparently going to bite, I will. What's the particular concern here?

If there was a God (which there isn't) and He had a sandbox (which he doesn't, because he doesn't exist to possess one), fixing genetic abnormalities is a *good* thing that should be done at every possible opportunity.

I don't want to speak for others, but I believe the concern is less divine and more "we don't know what we will **** up in trying to fix something we don't truly understand."

Also, "if there were". #tmyk

Your anti-theist presumptions aside, I'll simply point out that my statement stands.

Humanity is not ready for the consequences of such science or action. It matters not one whit whether you do or do not possess faith, allow for faith, or otherwise deny any god or gods that may or may not exist.

Humanity is not ready to play with God's sandbox.

It strikes me how many science-fiction works have this as the central premise of their plot. It also strikes me how anti-science many science-fiction works are.

Lawyers will stop it.

Lose the child? Billion dollars to the parents. Child born with abnormalities? Several billion to the parents.

After all, the doctors are playing god so folks will expect miracles.

Heck, the kid can be born totally fine and get some random disease in 10 years and the parents will sue.

God can do his/her thing mainly 'cause he/she can't be served.

I would suggest it is a central theme of literature in general. Mary Shelley comes to mind, and Frankenstein is a Gothic romance. Faust originates in folklore. Icarus and Prometheus and pretty much of all of Sophocles and Ovid aren't that far removed. The Parable of the Sun is likely applicable, too.

Knowledge is power. The implications of that truth are almost limitless in their narrative possibilities.

Many things have been considered not ready to do until we did them. As long as no one is forcing anyone on anything I'm not opposed to it going forward. Individuals should be free to decide if they want to "fix" their children or "leave them as God intended them to be"

What would I do? I really don't know. I'm leaning toward wanting what's best for my child's well being, but I can see the other side's argument.

Daedalus wanted what was best for his son, too.

I have no problem with genetic engineering provided there is no mandate to do it, and that prohibitions arise against genetic-engineering based discrimination a la Gattaca.

Correcting a genetic defect is not the same as altering the natural genetics of something to make it different entirely.
