I love "Based on a Play."

Meh. I'm not expecting it to top Kenneth Branagh's version.

::edit:: Just noticed it had Nathan Fillion in it. I'm revising my original opinion. I really hope he plays Benedick.

::double edit:: I take that back. They have Fillion playing Dogberry, for crying out loud. And Acker playing Beatrice and Alexis Denisof playing Benedick? Not impressed. Those roles need someone strong, fiery, and playful... And Acker and Denisof are about as far from what I'd put in those roles as I can imagine.

Denisof was pretty strong and firey in the later seasons of angel, also rugged.

For at cast list like that, this movie needs to live up to a lot of hype.

Wes was a stone-cold badass in latter Angel.

I would have placed Denisof and Acker as good Claudio/Hero characters. Stone cold badass still doesn't really fit with the Benedick character though- there was little cold about him- more playfully aggressive, humorous and witty.

Fillion would have made a great Benedick.I'm not sure offhand who I would have used for Beatrice- Christina Hendricks would have done very well- she and Fillion have the perfect chemistry for it, too.

Just caught this trailer today:

Also, it has an IMDB page and appears to be scheduled for 7 June, 2013.

It's kinda cool to see what Joss' house looks like. (His wife was the architect.)

Monologues are hard to work in, but if you are going to it "by the words", your choices are limited.

Finally saw this since it was added to netflix.
I liked it, but had a few issues with it. I watched this with my 14 year old daughter and felt that it was perhaps less accessible than the Branaugh version. One of the reasons to do a 'modern' version of the play is to make it more relateable to contemporary audiences. Unfortunately the dialog was too fast for someone unfamiliar with the play as my daughter was, to actually keep up in many places.
The decision to use black and white I assume as an economic one but it too alienated my daughter. (and seems a bit dark for such a light hearted play)

I personally enjoyed the performances, but I experienced the same thing I do with nearly all Joss Whedon productions-- relating the characters back to other stuff they've done with Joss.

Even bit characters like Margret I am constantly reminded of her role in Avengers.

Is it as good as the moonlight episode based on Taming of the Shrew?
