Was just talking to a coworker about cellphones. I brought up how the insurance plans they sell on those are total ripoffs and you'd have to be an idiot to buy one.

"Well, you don't have kids. They're worth every penny. My son once stripped the wires from the charger and put them right into the outlet because someone on the internet said it would charge the battery faster. Fried the whole thing."

"Uh, I'm pretty sure they don't cover stuff like that."

"Duh, I told them the phone was stolen. I'm not stupid."

"...so its worth it only if you want to commit insurance fraud?"

"Oh, grow up. You make it sound like its so bad, just wait until you have kids."

I pay $20/mo for insurance on my $600 phone, and have replaced it 4 times in 2 years.

Of course it's not worth $600 now, but you get the point.

It's always interesting for me to see where people draw their own personal line when it comes to the legal system. The line that is illegal, but not "illegal enough" for their own personal, "moral code." Even Batman suffers from this, since he wants to rid Gotham of crime but he himself is a criminal.

I have the insurance on the phone. It is $7.00 a month. If I need to call for something, I am honest with them about it.

$100 bucks for the deductible is better than forking out another several hundred for the phone.

some credit cards insure your phone if you're paying your bill via your credit card.

See regardless of other ways to insure my phone... I look at it this way. They are providing me with a service, and part of that service is supposed to be integrity on their part. So I am going to give them my integrity also.

They are a big corporation and do not need to care about me... but I am a person, and I do need to care about my integrity.

If my (hypothetical) kid destroyed his phone by doing that, he sure as hell isn't going to get it replaced by insurance. Give him a shitty flip-phone and let him deal with the consequences of his actions.
