I've not seen Sherlock Holmes, but I'm going to say Avatar. In 3D, if available. If not available, go to somewhere that is is available and see it there.

Also, AraMüs, quick Sherlock question: does the film suffer from not being an origin story of Holmes/Watson? From what I've read, all that is more or less taken for granted and the film jumps in while their relationship is well-established.

I made my feelings clear on Avatar, so without even seeing Holmes I would suggest that.

Anyways, I would like to see this movie as I have a nerd spot for English-history pieces.

If I had to see one. It would be Avatar. Holmes is a more traditional "Blockbuster" movie. Avatar makes you think a bit.

And no, it doesn't suffer from not introducing Holmes and Watson. In fact, the fact it takes it for read that Oh hey, that's Sherlock, and that's Watson is quite refreshing.

Agreed. I rather liked that the story started right away.

A thoroughly average movie, imo. Of the five people I went with, only one said they liked it, the other four of us all thought it was just ok.

Far too much action to be called a Sherlock Holmes movie, and it and the "cerebral" portions of the film were mostly just average all around.

I wasn't impressed. The Clash of the Titans preview before the movie was better, all one minute of it. Of course, I love Clash, and if it sucks I will be quite upset.

Amusingly, I'm just old enough that the special effects in the original CotT seemed cheesy to me when they first came out. I loved them, but it was obviously movie special effects, not a seamless flow the way even then I thought they should be.

I went to see Sherlock Holmes last night and enjoyed it. Not jumping up and down, rocking back and forth, drooling on my chin loved it, but I liked it. I can see the cast and crew doing several more of these, and want to see at least the set up sequel.

I loved the flawed but strong Watson, a brilliant development, imho. I've always disliked the bumbling version of Watson movies have shown to counterpoint Holmes brilliance. Good lord man, the Watson of the books and short stories was a man that Holmes was impressed with, cared for enough that he was Holmes only real friend, and considered him as a brother. In that relationship I think Ritchie stayed true to the concept, if not the letter of the books.

The fight in the ring scene set the pattern for the cerebral spot-planning. The humiliate the fiance by analyzing every little thing about her scene advanced the plot and set her up as a person, not just a plot device in costume.

Gladstone stole my attention in his few scenes. I could grow to like that dog.

Sherlock Holmes adapts to the screen only moderately well. It is hard to make a great movie about the character because of the complexity of the man. This one did a decent job, maybe good.

I'll buy a copy.

I want to see Sherlock more than Avatar. And I am digging the new CotT trailer, but I will always love the original. It was Harryhausen at his finest.

Point. if you care about that kind of thing. 3D is a 70 mile drive so that adds another $10-15 to the overprice.

For me it's a $9 ticket, that's it. Theater with 3D is within walking distance of my Northern Ontario small-town home. :p

I liked Sherlock Holmes. Good lead for a sequel. Great cast, and I loved the introduction of the professor.

Its definitely worth matinée prices. I didn't like the fact that he's a combat genius too. But thats my only real complaint.

Its mentioned in canon that he is an expert boxer. Comes as a surprise to most folks because the regular portrayal would never have him sully himself with exertion.

I really, really enjoyed this, and was also overjoyed to see Robert Downey Jr. take the Best Actor (Comedy/Musical) Golden Globe last night.

Also, Sherlock Holmes was announced for Blu-ray arrival on March 30th! Not too far to go, and that'll save me a bunch of money on seeing it in theaters multiple times.

He is in the books.
