If you have an old motherboard your SATA ports may not even be meant for DVD drives, they may be meant for SATA 1.5 HDD's.

Same issue here: http://www.tomshardware.com/forum/25544 ... t-plugging

Unfortunately it seems that the solution is to stick with an IDE in that case.

Probably the answer I needed. Thanks. So, looks like I have exhausted all avenues to upgrade from XP to 8.1. No worky on this machine. Will start to prepare for a new build.

More Advice if you will?

So, given that I now will need to build a new rig........and I am trying to keep it on a budget, opinions?

I only play WoW atm. I watch YT videos and try to watch the craptastical mlb.tv online. Other than reading, that's about it.

So, been looking at the FX 6300, because it seems popular and it's only $109 bucks right now with discount at newegg. Never owned an AMD chip. I'm a little intrigued with the AMD A10-7700K. Add to a decent $60ish mobo, and that's pretty good bang for the buck on paper.

The i5's start around $190 for the non-OC lower end chips. I could get away with a cheaper mobo like a B85 or H87, but that's still likely going to be $125-$150 more?

I'm looking at the 750ti vs R7 260x. Both are close in price and supposed performances. The 750i supposedly used much less power, but that shouldn't really matter as I have a 650w PSU.

Any input is appreciated. I'm trying to keep this thing $500 or less if possible. It might go a bit over once I add a case and a couple of fans, but not by much. I have already spent $250ish on the SSD, Win8.1, and a new dvd now. I will need to pick up another HDD, but that shouldn't be much $.

Thanks.

Okay, so after more reading, I think the better option is probably a cheap i3. I can always upgrade later, and from what I've seen the i3 outperforms the FX chip on games like WoW. As a budget build (minus the parts I already have) I have something like this. I've already purchased the SSD, OS, and dvd drive. I will reuse the monitor, keyboard, mouse, and PSU (Corsair 650w modular) I currently have.

PCPartPicker part list / Price breakdown by merchant / Benchmarks

CPU: Intel Core i3-4130 3.4GHz Dual-Core Processor ($113.98 @ SuperBiiz)
Motherboard: Biostar Hi-Fi B85S3+ Ver. 6.x Micro ATX LGA1150 Motherboard ($59.99 @ Newegg)
Memory: A-Data XPG V1.0 8GB (2 x 4GB) DDR3-1600 Memory ($72.99 @ Newegg)
Storage: Western Digital Caviar Blue 1TB 3.5" 7200RPM Internal Hard Drive ($56.98 @ OutletPC)
Video Card: MSI GeForce GTX 750 Ti 2GB Video Card ($129.99 @ Newegg)
Case: Corsair SPEC-03 White ATX Mid Tower Case ($66.98 @ Newegg)
Case Fan: Corsair Air Series White 2 pack 52.2 CFM 120mm Fan ($16.77 @ NCIX US)
Total: $517.68
(Prices include shipping, taxes, and discounts when available.)

Any thoughts?

I don't know much about the parts you've chosen, but as a different point of view, here are the parts I've got sitting in my Amazon cart ready to order. I am planning a small form factor PC to replace my ailing laptop; don't plan on needing to play anything above 1080p.

• Intel Core i5-4570S 2.9Ghz - $198
• GeForce GTX 750 Ti Superclock - $150
• Kingston 8GB 1600Mhz DDR3 - $76
• Gigabyte LGA 1150 Intel Z87 Motherboard - $120
• Corsair CX 500W Modular PSU - $60
• BitFenix Mini ITX Case - $80
• WD Blue 1TB 7200RPM HDD - $60

Total: $744
