I'm setting up my 'rents' new lappy and they need a good word processor. Any suggestions? I haven't touched Windows in five years, and back then, Open Office was The Thing.

OpenOffice has forked. LibreOffice is, I believe, the preferred package by FOSS advocates, but OpenOffice is still fine.

Google docs isn't bad. It autosaves as you type, which can be very handy, as well as being stored in the cloud.

If they don't need all the bells and whistles, WordPad is free and gets the job done - to a point.
If they need more oomph than that, and can accept the "must have internet access" restriction, a free Microsoft Live account comes with access to all the web-based apps on Office.com:

If they need a full-featured offline word processor, sorry - haven't used anything but Word in a long, long time.

I second shuyung's recommendation of LibreOffice. Oracle terminated the driving forces behind the Document Foundation and liquidated them in a workforce reduction. There are some legal issues still floating around out there over a few bits of code, but Apache OpenOffice is the product you remember; LibreOffice is a superior FOSS fork that is working toward the standards established by Sun and the Document Foundation in the early part of the last decade. Oracle OpenOffice is a retail product that like almost all other Oracle products is best left forgotten at this point. *wanders off mumbling about evil, money grubbing parasites*
