https://www.google.com/get/cardboard/

Google has developed a spec in which you take a few bucks worth of cardboard, lenses, Velcro, and a rubber band, and turn it into a cheap VR system. Combined with the hardware, an app does the screen splitting and interpolation necessary to project a 3d image inside the headset.

It uses a little sliding magnet to trick the docking system into thinking it's undocking / redocking, which the app turns into a "click" event. Very low tech hardware, with some ingenious software.

Picked up a kit last weekend. Pretty neat - there are a handful of decent apps - nothing I'd sit playing for hours, but enough that it'll entertain everyone on Christmas.

I wonder how far along this was when Oculus announced their Samsung partnership for the Gear VR.

It's convincing enough to make your stomach jump in Google Earth looking down over Chicago.

I will get one, but having to hold it up with your hands seems lame. Wish they'd throw a head strap in with the cardboard kit.

VR = sweet
Cheap hardware mods = sweet

What's foolish about wanting to provide a virtual reality experience by augmenting hardware we've already got with an extremely cheap kit?

I think it's the name. Using such a recognizable high-tech branding scheme on something so totally low-tech just makes it feel like a parody. Reminds me of Log, and Happy Fun Ball.

Yep, every person I showed at work thought I was pranking them. "Google Cardboard?"

And then, after they saw it, they thought it was awesome.

I'll definitely have to try this, looks like fun for zero dollars.
