YOU CAN BELIEVE: The X-Files Is Officially Returning!

THE X-FILES IS OFFICIALLY COMING BACK! Rinse out your black t-shirt with "I want to believe" on it, because it's freaking happening, people. Mulder and Scully are returning!!!!

Fox just issued a press release confirming the long-whispered return of The X-Files — and also confirming the return of David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson as FBI Agents Fox Mulder and Dana Scully.

It's been 13 years since the finale (and a couple of so-so films in between) and now Fox has re-ordered a six-episode X-Files run, with original showrunner Chris Carter.

In the PR release, there's lots of nice talk, like this bir from Carter saying he thinks of the hiatus as a, "...13-year commercial break." And as for what's in store, lots more weirdness as Carter seems pretty giddy about the state of scifi television today, "The good news is the world has only gotten that much stranger, a perfect time to tell these six stories."

Hell. Yes.

I hadn't dared to hope when I heard rumors last week.

A six episode run should be tight, so I am optimistic. I didn't even know there were "a couple" of movies. I only saw one, and was underwhelmed.

I've begun a rewatch of the series from the beginning after, uh, finding the beautiful HD transfers that are inexplicably being broadcast in Germany (dammit, just release them to iTunes!). Phe and I are about halfway through season 2 right now (most recent ep: "Die Hand Die Verletzt"). It's really amazing how well it holds up, Scully's shoulder pads aside.

In watching these German broadcasts (which have been synched with English audio, but retain German lower third text), I've two thoughts on the German language:

1. I don't speak German, nor do I read German, but I can kinda make out what it's supposed to read, like squinting in the Matrx. German is like English that's so angry it's frothing at the mouth.

2. English titles: six or seven letters. German version? Like, 40. For one word. How can Germans possibly use Twitter? Two words and they're out of characters.

A single word in German can express lots of words in English. For instance, "Donaudampfschiffahrtsgesellschaftskapitän" is "Danube Steamship Company Captain."

I am so, so happy for him. Nanjiani is a huge freaking fan. And he's in the Darin Morgan-penned episode to boot!

So, I've realized, when I go back and watch old X-Files episodes, that I have a problem now with this show that I didn't in 1993.

22 years ago, Fox Mulder seemed like the reasonable one and everybody else was just closed-minded. Now, Fox immediately seems to be a nutcase. The fact that his idiotic hunches based on no real evidence always turn up right is maddening.

Hey, I was into new age stuff and believed in all that supernatural garbage. The aliens seemed more far fetched, but not completely nutty.

Now... i actually have the same view of the aliens stuff, but the supernatural garbage is complete crap.

It's really no different from any other "cleverest person in the room" character. Mulder, the Doctor, House, Sherlock Holmes...they all have a superpower. They've read the script.
