Oh, that is nice, I hadn't noticed that yet. 10130 is running pretty good right now. Edge is still spotty and full of crashes, and I see crashes with the new pictures program, but the rest of the OS has run well. The quick access settings from the notification bar are very nice. Although I have to say making the volume bar horizontal is a... strange choice.

MS has explained the free Windows 10 confusion...

Quote:
The nuance here is that Microsoft will keep fresh copies of Windows 10 activated for testers only if they keep opting-in to future preview updates. So if you’ve clean installed a Windows 10 preview build and upgrade to the final then you don’t have to worry about activation as long as you keep receiving pre-release updates.

Free as long as you continue testing early updates.

Quote:
If you install a Windows 10 preview copy right now and upgrade to the final release on July 29th and then opt-out of pre-release updates then you won’t be genuine anymore if you didn’t upgrade from a copy of Windows 7 or Windows 8.1. Microsoft says you’ll need to "roll back to your previous OS version or acquire a new Windows 10 license" if you clean installed the Windows 10 preview and opt-out of updates.

"If you do not roll back or acquire a new license the build will eventually expire." Microsoft is making it clear that clean installing the Windows 10 preview and upgrading just to get the final bits and opting-out of future updates "is not a path to attain a license for Windows XP or Windows Vista systems."

Still, if you clean install the Windows 10 preview now and continue to opt-in to future updates then you’ll get your free copy of Windows 10, but you’ll have to put up with potential pre-release software bugs and continued updates in the future.

Ahhhh, so they're essentially paying people to be testers. Interesting tactic.

I guess if you don't mind being paid in valueless currency.

In which case, I have some old Milton Bradley board games around and a list of tasks I would like completed.

I use early/dev builds for nearly everything else, don't see any reason not to use them on my secondary OS. Nothing changes for me except not spending the $100-plus to upgrade.

Heh, I hadn't even noticed that.
I'm using a 5.1 speaker setup and a Das Keyboard, so my volume controls are physical; and when adjusting via my keyboard knob, the on-screen display is vertical.

Yeah, now that you mention it, that's even crazier! Clicking my hardware volume buttons brings up the vertical black/blue volume bar, but clicking the actual volume "speaker" icon brings up the horizontal. Do these teams not even talk to each other? :)

So, what are everyones thoughts on the view that Windows will turn into a subscription based OS?

It's been one of my biggest issues with Office 365, really hoping Windows doesn't continue the trend.

I mean, I get why MS likes it, I just prefer buying something once and being done with it until I decide to upgrade.

Not a fan. I don't mind sub stuff for things I don't *need*, but I don't want to be paying MS $20 a month or whatever for the rest of my life.

Most companies larger than a certain size are already on a subscription based licensing model. They already pay for the new operating systems, and Microsoft still can't get any of them to implement it! The military is paying MS between 9 and 31 million dollars to support Windows XP. Windows 7 is just now becoming the dominant system, and it came out SIX years ago. So it's not going to affect large business (where most of the money is made by MS), only small businesses and individual consumers.

For most individual consumers, Windows is something that comes with their PC, for free. They buy a machine, and it has Windows on it. Telling them they now have to pay any amount of money monthly to run the free thing is just dead on arrival. People don't move to the new Windows in general. Their system is working OK enough, and it's much easier to let it run now than move to the new windows for features most of them won't use. Giving away Windows 10 for free (for a year) is a blatant move by MS to get people to upgrade. MS has definitely pulled some boneheaded moves, but I don't see them charging for the OS. What I expect is for the OS itself to become something that's free, and them to start using ads to support development. There's already settings in Win10 to turn off "Occasionally show app and content suggestions in the start menu".

I didn't think it was subscription based just that you have to upgrade in the first year to get it for free

Also, I just noticed on one of my Win8.1 test boxes, this is in the "Start Screen".

Yeah, I was just using it as an example that MS is already injecting dynamic advertisement content into the OS directly.

3 new builds in 3 days, they're definitely ramping up for the release.

So far 10162 is running pretty good, Edge definitely seems quicker as well (although until it supports plugins, I personally don't really have a use for it).

And that has no business being on anyone's PC.

I can't speak for the other branches, but the Army ceased using XP at least 5 years ago. Part of the issue was Vista; it had a VERY short tenure with the Army and Windows 7 became the standard operating system a year later. I haven't seen an XP computer in the military in 5 years.

That said, we should still be on Windows 7; Windows 8 was totally unnecessary. Windows 10 should be 8 and should be 3-5 years off. Microsoft, like Apple, creates new versions far too frequently. I'm told 8 has underlying features that make it better than 7 if you use Classic Shell to make it "like 7" - if so, then 8 should have been released that way as 7.1 or something.

Basically, both OS and device manufacturers need to stop suggesting, stop helping, and stop making things "accessible". All it is, is a bunch of obnoxious bloatware aimed at a stereotype of the most vapid portions of society.

Ah, I should've been more specific, it was the Navy, according to this article - http://rt.com/usa/270526-navy-millions-windows-xp/

Yeah, it really takes MS about 6 years to create an OS (win 7 released in 2009), they just have a major beta release halfway through that cycle pretty consistently.

Also, 4 version updates in 2 weeks, MS is really actually going to try to release this thing it looks like. I have to say, build 10166 seems solid. Good stuff!

Can that be turned off or blocked somehow?

Click on any tile you don't want and "Unpin from Start."

Just like Windows 8.

Anyone know if Sruface Pro 3 owners get Win 10 upgrades for free/automagically?

A friend has one with Win 8.1 and he never got the upgrade icon through Windows Update.

Anything running Win 8 *should* have gotten the upgrade option.
My "Windows 8 with Bing" WinBook got the 'reserve your free copy' icon a couple of weeks ago.
As of right now, though, it's telling me they're "rolling out the free upgrade in waves" and will let me know when it's ready for me.

I found the fix on Reddit.
Fix for the 80240020 error when trying to install Windows 10
What this error means is, your Windows 10 installation folder is unfinished and/or corrupted. Now, how do you fix that?
1. Go into "C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution\Download" and delete everything in that folder.
2. Now, run the command prompt as an administrator. Type in "wuauclt.exe /updatenow".
3. Go to your Control Panel > Windows Update and your Windows 10 should start re-downloading from scratch, hopefully without flaws this time.

Shel,

We tried that "fix" as well as a different one we found.

It repotrted that he was missing two prerequisite updates, even though Windows Update is saying the system is up to date.

I'm also having trouble with a laptop that has the Insider Preview on it.

Once a day for the last week or so, it reboots itself trying to install updates. It gets to 32% and sits there for a few minutes, then errors out and reverts then reboots.

Edit: Not much time to troubleshoot, but this last problem seems to be related to KB3074683. I tried uninstalling it. It immediately reinstalled itself and rebooted, failed then reverted.
