I've always had desktops, but I'm seriously considering a laptop for gaming. My desktop is ancient now and the vid card died (90% sure that's what's wrong). I'm considering getting a laptop, which would possibly become my main machine, but maybe sink a couple hundred into a new gfx card fro the old desktop as a backup.

Anyway... Are these good for 1300-1500? Really, I'd like to spend less if possible, but I think I'm not willing to drop below the gtx 970m. I know the ASUS is supposed to run cooler, but the battery is not user-replaceable. No idea about the MSI battery. Is that a big deal?

Amazon links:
ASUS G751JT-CH71

MSI GT70 Dominator-2293

Or...something else?

My observation with every "gaming laptop" I've ever seen is that they're too heavy and hot to be considered actually portable. Replace the video card for your desktop, and get a tablet/Surface/cheap laptop with the savings. Then, you'll be able to surf portably, and have a better gaming experience when you're chained to your desk and a wall outlet.

Thanks for your insights, Kaffis. I have some of the same reservations, though the true portability of a gaming laptop is not a huge deal, it would probably be a slight regret at times.

And now for something completely different...

...I slapped a GTX 970 in my old box. Holy Mother of Spaghetti Monster! This thing is quite a treat coming from a GTX 460.

I finally made the jump to an SSD. The single largest performance increase I've ever experienced. :)

I bought an ASUS laptop two years ago I use for gaming when I'm not at home (more and more recently it seems). Mostly it just has a dedicated graphics card and it's served me pretty well. It can run modded Minecraft pretty decently (which can be a ***** on systems) so it's served my purposes well

Sorry I didn't see this earlier.

I've had both an ASUS G75 and an MSI GT70. I don't think you can go wrong with either, nice systems, and relatively cheap.

While kinda neat, comparing the surface book to the MSI GT70 or the Asus G75 that Ulfynn mentioned, is like comparing a Toyota Prius to a Formula-1 car. It may or may not be a good car, but it's going to lose the race.

The other laptops are gamer PCs. :)

I've never seen the point in a gaming laptop.

If I wanted something reasonably portable to game on, I'd go with a compact LAN box (or something similar) and build it out with components I could upgrade & change.

When I want a laptop, I want something ultra-portable, light weight, and I rarely game on it.

I would never game anymore if i didn't have a gaming laptop. I tend to play games while lying down somewhere comfy.

Furthermore, I found in about 10 years of desktop PC gaming, I never had a viable upgrade path. The GPU alone was never enough, and replacing the CPU almost always required switching motherboards, which necessitated switching RAM too. And since your hard drive was likely full anyway... oh ****, look at that. I just replaced the entire computer.

I have a desktop PC. It's a media center I built for $400 Cdn (including monitor). My laptop is a gaming PC. If I want something ultra-portable, I'll use a tablet (like my Windows 10 Asus Transformer-book), or a phone.

See, that's why I put a nice recliner in front of my "desk", hung a decent sized monitor on the wall, and put my keyboard in my lap.

Best part? Playing games won't make me sterile this way! Or, you know, give me a hugely increased chance of testicular cancer.

While I highly doubt electromagnetic fields increase the risk of cancer, I'm absolutely convinced I am not at risk for testicular cancer.

Also...I really, really like my bed. The comfort level, the quiet, the isolation from kids - it also helps me know when it's time to shut down and go to sleep...because I nod off much faster. :D

You're playing games that don't pump you so full of adrenaline you literally cannot fall asleep fit hours after playing them?

You've gotten soft in your advancing age, Thistleshade.

I fell asleep playing the last Tomb Raider. (and that game terrified me.)

Not the EMF, it's the heat. Studies are pretty conclusive that for men, heavy use of a laptop that causes the generation of heat (such as gaming, video watching) with a laptop anywhere close to the testicular region tanks fertility and increases the risk of cancer.

But yeah, I also can't play in bed- prevents me from sleeping at all.

To be fair, I probably shouldn't be surprised. After all, monks took naps all the time.

Monks weren't usually sleeping when they feigned death. You could tell when I was sleeping in EQ because i'd be running against a wall for 15 minutes.
