It's mostly the lack of good material (he killed his screamy scene with Anakin at Mustafar, though), but he isn't well-served by anything. None of the Jedi come off well in the prequels, though. Every one of 'em who isn't Obi-Wan comes off as a giant dick.

See, I always thought they needed to give him an honorary Oscar for managing to not suck while delivering those god-awful lines.

And there's a great movie in Sith that is trying desperately to get out, encumbered though it is by the absolute lack of charisma exhibited by any actor other than McDiarmid (the only actor in the prequels to give a legitimately good performance), and buried by the leaden seriousness of its script. Christensen is excellent...so long as he doesn't open his mouth. Had he been able to give a totally silent performance, he'd have been brilliant.

While I don't agree about the "any actor other than McDiarmid" part, it seems your time in my head has lead to something rubbing off on you...

And, yes. The Mustafar duel in Revenge of the Sith standing alone is a better movie than the entirety of Return of the Jedi. It is the perfect microcosm of the entire relationship between Anakin and Obi-Wan, and is my prime exhibit A whenever somebody tries to tell me that the prequel lightsaber fights are soulless, empty calories of flashiness.

I love anything to do with the Emperor in ROTJ too much to agree. Especially with the "I have the higher ground. You know, all six inches of high ground! Don't try jumping, because it will fail. Forget about the fact that Darth Maul truly did once have the 'high ground' with me and I jumped and that turned out ok. And I didn't even have a lightsaber. In fact, just don't think about this situation at all."

I recently rewarched the movies as well. There are a few cringeworthy moments in the dialogue of RotJ... Perhaps signs we missed 32 years ago that Lucas was a hack, but overall the movie was still pretty good.

To compare with RotS, however... Which actually had an okay story, and tremendous action... every line anybody uttered was painful. In my mind, the great action scenes alone cannot overcome that. This wasn't like Return of the Jedi, with its two or three cringeworthy moments. This was an entire movie of mentally pleading, "please don't talk again!"

Remind me never to ever discuss Star Wars on this board ever again. Some of the most notorious troll communities on the internet are less negative than you guys.

For what it's worth, most of the people here who hated the prequels have so far loved The Force Awakens.

It appears that Disney may make back almost 50% of their investment in Lucasfilm from their profit on TFA box office receipts alone.

Being able to laugh at silly things is not the same as dishing out the troll hate. My comments should always be taken in the light as Family Guy's Star Wars movies. They poked all sorts of fun at Star Wars at shed tons of light on the problems. But they did so out of a place of love, not hate.

I have said here, for years and years and years, that the prequels don't bug me as much as they do the average fan. In fact, I think Jar Jar is just fine and not a part of the biggest issues I had with TPM.

It's when you can't laugh and admit that some of the things you love can be silly, is when problems arise. For me it's just not worth living life that way.

I will absolutely poke fun of Boba Fett and how he really wasn't very good at his job since all he did was hide in some trash, follow a ship, and then call the Imperials that Han & Co. were on Bespin and they needed to come do his job for him in terms of capturing. But then I will turn around and also always be the first to say that I thought Boba Fett was cool and a badass.

Nothing to do with the movie but it seems like a good place to put this.

I thought that the plot in Force Awakens was too much a rehash of the originals, instead of something that would make more sense. It seemed like the entire purpose of all the plot elements was to facilitate various tropes. I was hoping for an epic movie that would capture my imagination like the other Star Wars movies did. So I was disappointed.

They have a high natural tolerance. German emotional commercials are like Russian liquor -- devastating to foreigners who have no clue how in over their head they are.

The correct arrangement for the words you want to use would be: Du sprichst Deutsch. You speak German. As a statement. As a question it would be: Sprechen sie Deutsch?

Also, all nouns in German are capitalized. All. German does not distinguish between proper and common nouns for capitalization.

Actually, they may be on close enough terms that she can use the familiar du in place of the formal Sie. It's just that normally, when querying someone if they speak German, you don't know the person and thus rely on formality.

I would agree with this mostly. However, some of the criticism - whether we're talking about this movie, another movie, one or the other trilogy, whatever - is hyperbolic to the point of being reverse-fanboisim. Yeah we get it - the prequel trilogy is not as good as it should have been. It is also not nearly as bad as some people are making it out to be.

This movie is also good.

The reason I know this is I have a 9-year-old that assures me they were good, and the originals were good when I was 9. Star Wars is about being 7, 8, 9, 10, maybe 11 years old. If kids that age say they are good, they are good. Adults do not get to argue.
