I had no idea how to react to that. I am not sure if outright laughter should have been my response, or if I had to defend myself.

Depends entirely on the context.

As a life long Surthurnur, quite possible.

Did you say something about gun ownership? "God"? A particular version of religion? Gays? Non-white people? Unfettered capitalism? Taxes? Military? Football? Edumacation? Jeez, I could spend a lot of time on this....

Basically, you will want to just nod and agree and keep your mouth shut. Especially in mixed company or people you don't know very well. OR, you can be open and accept your badge of alienation. Although, as a new person in your area, this might not be favorable. I'd go with the keep the mouth shut option and just nod, at least for a while.

Like pretty much any other group, Southerners do not conform to stereotypes nearly as closely as people like to pretend. Some of them fit the stereotypes, some don't. Whether you're a liberal or not depends on the other person's perspective.

On any of those topics, you can also be called a Conservative, a racist, misogynist, or any other sort of label for not mouthing the appropriate platitudes in most of the rest of the country. Liberals are used to being able to spout their opinions publicly just about anywhere and rely on basic politeness to avoid anyone arguing with them. That's why they hate the South - it's the one place where they'll be talked back to.

It's also a fact that Southerners know full well that they're acceptable targets for bigotry which is ok because reasons. They've started not to care. It's amazing how constantly deriding and making fun of people is unconvincing.

a friend on FB posted the picture of the wall between Guatemala and Mexico, that has the caption why is it not racist for them to do it, but it is racist for the US to do it.

Now mind you, the person I am having this convo with is a born again Christian who claims that no one understands the word of God because they have not had the same teacher he did... he is also a dude who refuses to let players roll their own dice in gaming because all humans are cheaters, and liars.

So I pointed out that it was in Az, he said I missed the point, he wants secure borders because he loves the occupants, like he wants secure walls of his home to secure to protect the ones he loves.

So I decided to take the cheap shot job at his professed Christianity:
I said I see it as missing the point of loving everyone and trusting the laws to punish the bad, and not physical obstructions to hinder those with good hearts

So he claimed that of course a liberal would love to just let everyone in because we don't understand how things really work.

And while I admit, I have done a lot of growing as a person: but me... a full fledged Liberal. I could almost see some of our more liberal board members getting a shiver down their spines as if "as if millions of voices suddenly cried out in terror and were suddenly silenced"

I'm not entirely sure why you're friends with a guy that doesn't even trust people to roll their own dice. That said, it's a common conceit of "BAC"s that their particular church - as in, the one they, in particular happen to attend - somehow is the singular one engaging in "biblical" teaching and everyone else isn't.

That said, everyone that enters the country without going through the legal process is already breaking the law. We don't "punish the bad" and "not obstruct those with good hearts" in regard to any other crime; there's no real reason why immigration should have a special status where it's ok to break the law if you're a good person.

My main issue: Why bother raising a wall when we do not enforce the laws already? Enforce the laws we have. Adding more obsturctions is just essentially dick waving if we do not enforce the existing laws.

As far as remaining friends with this person: we used to be decent friends, now it is more of an acquaintance than anything.

Meh. I've been called a liberal by people on this board. It's meaningless.

I've had Montegue calling me a nazi neocon and Beryllin calling me a godless liberal in the same thread, over the same post.

We do enforce the laws we have - in the sense of apprehending people at the border. A wall would facilitate that by making it harder and slower to cross the border in the first place. That would have to be accompanied by more serious efforts at interior enforcement and deportation, but without efforts to significantly reduce the flow, interior enforcement won't really get anywhere.

All the proposals for a wall have been in the context of increased enforcement. You're right - just building a wall and letting it stand there unattended would be ineffective but that's not what those proposing a wall have been saying.

That probably just means you're right.

I enjoyed Kaffis's post, but this was a brilliant counter.

Monte vs. Bery, where right is center, center is left, and left is wrong.
