So, I love everything DooM. Even the controversial DooM 3. Naturally I knew I'd be getting the new one that was just released. I expected to enjoy the game as long as it had: 1. A Shotgun. 2. Demonspawn from hell. and 3. The ability to shoot demonspawn from hell with a shotgun.

I actually ended up enjoying the game far more than I expected to, which was a bit of a shock. It's intense and satisfying. Though I do recommend playing on at least Ultra Violence and disabling the compass and quest markers.

However if you do get the PC version, before you begin playing be sure to read this and take heed: Before starting up the game, be sure to go into Steam and disable Cloud Sync for this game. Then restart Steam for good measure.

There's currently a known bug, one that affected me as well, where save games somehow get corrupted and the game believes you are permanently in "Developer mode" and therefore flagged as cheating (no more achievements, some items unobtainable, no multiplayer, etc.). The only way to fix it currently is to do as I suggested with the cloud sync, delete your save games, and start over.

I am enjoying the game enough that while it was very frustrating, I'm willing to start over. It's just too damn fun. I'm enjoying the hell out of it, no pun intended.

Why do you write it as DooM?

Because it's hard to stick Image in every time you need to say DooM.

Pretty sure, back in the day, that is how it was commonly written by players on early forums. It's the way the word looks on the box, sorta.

I can never play any newer versions of this os Wolfenstein. The originals were some of my first gaming experiences on a computer back in the early 90s. I simply can't replace them, and don't want to even try. Playing those two games before there was a modern day internet with any sort of tutorial or cheats, sitting in a dark quiet room......it was a special experience. Peaking around corners and trying not to get killed with dark rooms and spooky sounds. :o

I tried out.. Doom 3, I think it was?

I just could not quite get past the fast that the game takes place on a Mars base, and despite the ability to get to Mars we apparently lost the ability to issue weapons to Marines, or produce functional space suits or night vision goggles. It was dark and spooky, but only in a "this place is dark and spooky because we totally lack common sense" kind of way.

Oh, Doom 3. Such a visual marvel. One of my favorite screenshots:

The new DooM is nothing like DooM 3. I liked DooM 3, but for different reasons that I liked the other DooM games.

You gain weapons really fast (moreso if you keep your eye out for secrets). Your suit allows you to be on the surface without the need for air canisters. The fighting is frenetic and fun; it encourages you to constantly be moving and getting in a demon's face -- standing still is death. The story is also decent (which is more than anyone could ask for from the first 2 DooM games). You aren't some randomsoldier_01, you were born a badass. In fact, the very first scene of the game is you awakening from a runed sarcophagus that was extracted from hell, your suit in an adjacent room in a similar sarcophagus. You are the one thing demons from hell fear. And it's great.

As for DooM's spelling, that's just how it's been done for 23 years. Just like people who spell the company's name as "Id" or "ID" or "I.D." are wrong. It's "id."
