The Glade 4.0

New PC and my first crack at windows 7. So far i'm not impressed. It seems sluggish (windows is constrantly preparing to configure my computer for huge lengths of time on every startup) and even something as installing a printer with an available driver seems harder.

Any tips? Grab your windows XP CD is a valid tip, and one i'm considering also. I do want to go forward and learn the new version if at all possible though.

wonder if there's some issue with one of the device drivers on your system? I know on mine since I installed windows 7 it's been noticably more responsive than with XP MCE.

Did you check the task manager to see what process was running and bogging it down?

I'm inclined to ask if this is an OEM install, and what all they preloaded. Then, I'm curious as to how much RAM you have.

In any event, this hasn't been my experience with 7 at all, so there should be a light at the end of the tunnel.

Yup, my experience with 7 has also been very good. In comparison to vista the UI is much snappier and everything as a whole just seems more quickly responsive. Sounds like you might have some shovelware going there.

Preparing to configure your computer means it's installing updates. If it keeps trying to install updates, something is going wrong somewhere down the line.

Don't blame the operating system, she's a good dog.

I've had some issues with Windows 7 on my laptop, but I mostly blame it on the fact that I bought it used with Vista and did an upgrade install. I'm planning to brain-wipe it this week. It runs flawlessly on my desktop machine.

My favorite OS yet.

2GB, the expectation being that it should run a lot better than the one gig system she replaced.
Norton, MS works, Nero Basic, Not sure what all else yet.

I'll see where its at when I get home. I left to the "preparing computer" screen when I went to work.

2 gigs for Vista/7 is slumming it. It can run fine, but you'll be much happier with 3 or 4 if you can spring for it. If not, turning Aero off and really being aggressive about stuff that is taskbar resident or runs itself as a service (eyes Norton) will probably help.

That said I kinda blew up my install with stupidity (don't ask) so here I am back on XP for the moment until I get a disk from my manufacturer.

Ever since purchasing Eset's NOD32 a few years ago, I have never looked back to Norton or McAfee. An anti-virus program that catches more viruses "in the wild" than either of those and whose entire engine and interface is written in the Assembly language, is your friend.

A couple people I know online said that their Windows 7 installs were very unstable, and IIRC they got theirs retail. I'll probably hold off until things are ironed out with patches and Service Packs.

Personally, I don't understand the hate for Vista. I've had no more problems with it than I have had with XP (or any previous Windows iteration).

The only thing I don't like about Windows 7 is that the start menu sucks donkey balls. I want my old start menu back.

It's a Vista start menu (which was just a reskin of the XP start menu) + pinning,. I love it. When I go into work tomorrow (haven't yet upgraded at home), I'll hunt around for a classic start menu option. I'm pretty sure it exists.

I too love the W7 start menu + pinning.

Also, using Start/Run and typing whatever you are looking for usually had positive results. The search indexing is much much better in 7.

It took a bit to get used to, but now I also love the Win7 start menu.

What, exactly, do you need the typed-out path for? Are you aware you can click on the path bar and it will display the path?

I am digging Windows 7. My daughter just got a laptop and it came with Windows 7 home premium on it... I like it.
