Perhaps it should be included that one says what all three of those things mean to them? Otherwise, there is no context in which to judge the statement. Who knows what some people think a "classical liberal" is.

That's not necessary. There are standard definitions.

But people aren't necessarily going by the standard definitions when they classify themselves.

If you want to draw conclusions from your poll, then it is your problem, unless you feel ok with drawing conclusions based on inaccurate answers.

For an offhand poll on an Internet message forum, I am willing to accept a very large margin of error. As to the accuracy of the data, it should be highly accurate regarding how the respondents view themselves. Whether they are correct in their understanding is another matter entirely, and beyond the scope of this poll.

That depends entirely on the conclusion. If the poll indicates that half the respondents can't be assed to read a book or two before classifying themselves with labels they don't understand... Well there are certainly accurate conclusions that can be drawn from that data, although they aren't very flattering.

I has no idea which option I should be voting for, so I won't vote! Yay! All I know is that I believe myself to be financially conservative. And kinda split on social issues. Kinda. I took the test again and ended up with:

Economic Left/Right: 8.50
Social Libertarian/Authoritarian: -0.97

This poll is tough for me. I used to be a social conservative, but I've moderated and taken on more socially liberal ideals. For instance, on the issue of gay marriage, I've been convinced we should allow religious institutions to define the construct of "marriage" according to their traditions and wishes, but I'll happily allow the government to allow civil unions for anybody and everybody, regardless of sexual orientation. I view civil unions as a contract between two consenting people of majority age.

But I'm still vehemently anti-abortion and there are still quite a few other issues where I'll take a more socially conservative stance.

It's interesting that for all that there are a lot of major disagreements on various political and fiscal policy issues among the members here, that there is a majority of folks all listing the same classification.

I think that's mostly because the poll says "fiscal" instead of "economic". The intention of the "political compass" is for the economic axis to measure how much government involvement you desire in the economic sphere, not whether you want a balanced federal budget or less government spending in general.
