That's because of the hard drive. Mass Effect can only be played from the hard drive in which it was originally saved.

I upgraded my 20gb to a 250gb (7200rpm, custom "hack") and the same thing happened to me. All of my other save games were fine (ME1 included), but ME2 was ****.

The good news here, is that I was able to start a new game with all of the expected bonuses. It bases your credits, resources, and experience on your achievements - not on a previous save game.

That's not good news for me. Because it was a banned console, I couldn't get online, meaning my gamertag never saved online. Since my gamertag was wiped, I needed to use "recover gamertag." By doing this, it forgets everything I did since the last backup that occurred when I was connected to XBL. I had a good chunk of the ME2 achievements, but not anymore. It doesn't even show that I've played it. I don't know why my entire gamertag was corrupted, but it's really disappointing to have happen if you play a lot offline. You lose everything.

Your profile (saved games, etc) is never saved online. If you want to transfer it to another hard drive, you need a memory card to transfer it.

I know this. However the entire gamertag was corrupted, thus it needed to be restored from a backup server. You can't use a saved game file if it's attached to a corrupted gamertag. You can't even log into a corrupted gamertag. When I loaded up ME2, it told me the file was attached to a corrupted gamertag, thus the file was corrupted and had to be deleted.

All games I played previously to having my gamertag saved online will play just fine. It's only the games I played while I was offline since the last online backup that are corrupted. So let's say the last backup was on 1/1/2010. Every game I played since 1/1/2010 was corrupted; every game before shows no signs of corrupted files.

I know the files never leave my hard drive. The gamertag attached to those saves does leave the hard drive though. Thankfully, I was able to restore my gamertag. I still don't understand why my gamertag got corrupted to begin with. It's the same hard drive, just a newer 360.

so how the hell do you get the last team members when it forces you to go to the collector ship? I am still missing Tali and Thane.

Talking about the abandoned collector ship? You're free to continue moving forward after that.

It's only after you get the
Spoiler:
IFF from the derelict Reaper

That you need to hurry. If you do any more than one mission (Legion's loyalty) after that point,
Spoiler:
your entire crew sans Chakwas will die

In other news, I'm on game two - about 7 hours in - playing a Vanguard on casual. I fly around using Charge and shotgun down 3 opponents at point blank all the time. It's awesome.

End goal being a two "perfect" end-game saves. Full paragon + everyone alive, and a full renegade + everyone. I know that normally a renegade player wouldn't care about loyalty or people living, but I like the characters too much.

I might be okay with Jacob and Jack dying on my renegade game. They suck dicks.

any favorite classes yet?
I loved the infilitrator, have not really played with the others much though I am thinking the one with the biotic surge would be the next best tactically.

I played an Infiltrator first and I definitely think they're the strongest right next to Soldier. The soldier adrenaline rush ability is just overpowered with the assault rifles.

I'm having a fun time with Vanguard.

I feel like Adept and Engineer's viability will really depend on who you decide to bring along with you. Sentinel seems like it can be fairly self-reliant.

Is it after you get the quest, or after you get the actual device in question that you need to hurry? Though I have the quest to go, I haven't gone yet, still working on side quests, loyalty stuff, that sort of thing.

I started over on my insanity run with a fresh character rather than a level 30 import. Much, much easier. Haven't had any trouble at all. I finished Horizon only dying once. The real test will be the Collector Ship, but I'll have the Widow this time. I already one shot collectors with a single headshot with the Mantis sniper rifle, so I'm thinking the Widow might get me a harbinger with one shot.

Also, it upset me a great deal that when I shot the Praetorian with the Cain, it didn't die. I was even more upset that I shot the Thresher Maw with the Cain and it only took about 15% of his health away. I was like, "WTF? That thing does 10,000 damage."

EDIT:

Also, has anyone checked out the new Cerberus Armor and Weapon from the Cerberus Network? Apparently came out today. Weapon is a shotgun, apparently and it seems to be good at medium range because the spread is a lot tighter than the other shot guns.

the shotgun is awesome. I do not think I got the armor though.

And are we ever given the chance to put a bullet into the Illusive Man?

Spoiler:
there is just something about this bastard that makes me want to kick puppies. I am unsure if it is the fact that Martin Sheen is convincing in the role, but I just want to cause much pain.

The armor is pretty good as far as the uncustomizational armor. 10% health, shields and heavy weapon ammo capacity. Nothing you can't get with customizing your N7 armor, but not bad. It looks pretty horrible, though.

I read that. It's got a point, but only one of them. Character depth and interaction in ME2 is awesome, no doubt. What about other elements?

I've played both. I think it's neck and neck. To flat out say one is clearly better than the other is simply bias. Appreciate both of them for what they are. They're both incredible games. I get it though. It's always a competition.

In my personal opinion, I'd play through Uncharted 2 again. I'm finding it difficult to get through ME2 again after my save file was corrupted after being nearly completed. I think it's because ME2 is SO story heavy. It's hard to read the same 2000 page book on back to back weekends. That's why I've begun Bioshock 2. Hopefully, by the time I'm done, I'll be ready to jump back into ME2.

I finished my Insanity playthrough tonight. Last mission wasn't nearly as difficult as I thought it would be and the last boss was a joke with a fully upgraded Widow as an Assassin Infiltrator with the assassin cloak. Only took 8 shots total.
