So, a friend ate a bunch of sauteed spinach last night and was overly gassy while his inlaws were over the house watching the Super Bowl...

My friend wanted to know does eating spinach cause extra gas?

Being a good friend, I thought I would turn to the knowledgeable Glade for answers.

It was really good spinach sauteed in garlic and olive oil...or so my friend told me. :?

Before someone legitimately answers this... Did this "friend" have Foamy britches at the end of the night?

Thankfully, no. He was also able to blame most of the noise on his child who was playing on the floor.

Short answer, green vegetables, yes.

Gas problem aside, that sounds good.

Agree. Down south we are known to eat all sorts of "greens"....turnips, collards, mustard greens, and even spinach. All will cause "gas". Also, boiled cabbage........mmm, with chunks of ham/fatback (but it doesn't agree with my bellah!)

And the older I get, the more I tend to "toot"......so at this point in life, I stopped caring :D

Besides, I just blame it on my dogs.

Fiber slows down digestion which allows time for fermentation in the gut, creating gas. Same reason beans do it. Sadly this means that the heathiest foods are the gassiest, but after you eat them regularly your innards figure out how to handle it.

Tell that to the walking-methane factories that evolved to live on that stuff ;)

Moddern cattle didn't 'evolve' at all. They've been bred for meat or milk production. Non-domesticated ruminants don't have the issue to that extent.

I dunno, I've been eating beans and fiber for over 30 years. I'm still pretty much the gassiest person I know.

Then again, maybe I'm just a "non-domesticated ruminant."

Unfortunately for some of us, the bacteria in our gut that are involved in the fermentation will always be out of balance, thus producing excess gas (i.e. carbon dioxide, methane, etc.). This is largely genetic, but as most everything else it has many environmental influences. All I can say is use items like Beano and Gas-X if you feel you have serious gas problems. I find they don't work too well for me, unfortunately, so I deal with the issue by other means. Let's leave it at that.

Sometime 'figuring out how to handle it' means 'merciful deadening of the olfactory senses' and 'desperate appeal to sense of humour'. Around here we've embraced flatulence as communication.

More 'more' than 'less'.

There was a woman who was at issue with her husband over her alleged flatulence.

At the insistence of her mate she relents and makes an appointment with her family doctor. At her visit she tells the doctor that she is only there to shut her husband up and that there is no "real" problem. She goes on to explain that although she farts frequently they are barely audible
and have absolutely no smell. The doctor thinks about it and sends her home with a prescription, telling her to come back a week later.

When she comes back to his office, she tells him that there has been no change in the frequency of her emissions , but now they smell like rotting eggs. The doctors only reaction to this was... "Its good to know we cleared up your sinuses. Now to work on your hearing...."

If you fart when no one is around...does it count as being extremely gassy? I think I qualify as never gassy, because I don't share my farts :P

The closest sharing is farting in a patients room, and they are on a ventilator. Even if someone walks in accidently..so easy to say "geez, he's been doing that all night"
