So I was called for Jury Duty today, but wasn't kept. Kinda glad for the experience, wish I could've stayed on, but also glad to not miss a second day from work.

Very interesting. Criminal sex case involving a juvenile. Frankly, it was a bit enlightening. Even if that guy is guilty as sin, a feel a bit sorry for him. There's no way he's getting an impartial trial. I could read it in those people's faces.

Meeting every Tuesday for a year for 9 hours a day.

For $30 a day.

Depends on your place of employment's policy on jury duty, Müs. If you're getting full pay to do so, that's not so bad.

Forced labor ftw! Hate to sound all lolbertarian here, but it always amazes me that people are so sanguine about the idea that the government can force you to serve on a jury. Imagine they said you had to do highway construction or process IRS forms every Tuesday for a year, for $30 a day. The whole country would go apesh*t, but call it jury duty, and people just sigh and complain about the inconvenience. Quite remarkable really.

If you run your own business (ie. "eat what you kill") this does not happen. Still have to pay rent/utilities/etc. but no money coming in.

I believe most people understand and appreciate the link between wanting a jury of their peers should they run afoul of the law, and being that person in the box.

You are a white male with a college degree?

Who dismisses you, defense or prosecution?

The Grand Jury thing I got was a voluntary thing. I thought it would be pretty cool to go do, but I can't commit to that kind of time. My job would kill me.

Probably varies depending on the nature and strength of the case.

I don't know honestly. In my area, Montgomery County PA, you can check the day before online, and the last 3 times I have gotten the "you are not needed for this, you have been returned to the Jury pool".

I admit $30 is borderline criminal, you should talk to your state legislator about that, but seriously how else do we get juries?

I'd like to go. I think it'd be neat.

I've served on three juries over the years, once as foreman. I was happy to do my part, fulfill my responsibility as a citizen.

Fester, you probably came across as too intelligent. The trick to getting on a jury is to come off as a litle naive, the lawyers want the jury to believe them, not question ther assertations.

I've received grand jury questionairres too, but since it was voluntary and I had no agenda to pursue, I chose to stay out of the spotlight.

I've been called several times, only served once. Got out a couple of times thanks to being in school, others I called the night before and wasn't needed.

The first time was when I served, drunk driving case. I sat there during the interview process, and nobody asked me a single question. People got recused all around me, but I just sat there.

Naturally, I wound up on the jury. There were two of us in health care, everyone else worked for MD Helicopters.

It was kind of funny, since the prosecutor looked like Star Jones when she was fat, and the defense attorney looked like Robert Carradine from Revenge of the Nerds.

I figure it was 1 of three potential things, since I was dismissed by the prosecutor:

1) Don't have kids, so less likely to sympathize with the victim.
2) Told him, when asked, that some friends had had a bad experience with police.
3) Indicated that I believed myself able to overcome emotional responses and make my decision logically.

Every time I get a summons, there is always a number I'm supposed to call 24 hours before the date I'm supposed to go in. When I call and input the number, it will tell me if I have to actually show up or not. Every time I've done it, they always say I'm excused and don't have to come in, so I've never actually had to go and not get picked.

That is not borderline criminal that's $3.75/hr which is ridiculously under the minimum wage.

In my opinion we should do away with the jury system and only have judges. I trust a judge to make fairer decisions than everyday people who aren't trained in the court system.

The defendant has the right to waive a jury and leave the decision of guilt to the judge already.
