I miss the days when lawmakers took lawmaking seriously. Instead of trying to rush through 1200 page documents into law in under a week or whatever.

That's because back then they actually listened to one another, and both side compromised on items for the betterment of the people. Whereas today most politicians only seem to care about themselves (including special interests), or their parties first and foremost.

Well, to be fair, "back then" they were united against a common enemy and time was of the essence. "United we stand, divided we fall" or whatever was imperative.
Not so much today, except in times of great crisis.
