rules. And I know we've had a long discussion on the second glade about it but everything is new now so:

Would saying that something is gay (as in lame) be against the rules as listed regarding sexual orientation even when directed at non-sexual actions or even objects? (Calling any person gay is of course a pejorative as is calling someone lame).

Would saying that something is lame (as in boring) be against the rules as an insult?

Kaffis and I had this discussion on the previous incarnation of the Glade. Our conclusion was that it would be safer for you to use "crippled retarded kid" instead of "gay" for all of your lame/boring/stupid needs. It's less offensive all-around, and nobody's raised a ***** over it.

I'm thinking as long as you don't call a poster or their actions "gay", then you're safe.

I'm not speaking as a moderator here because we haven't discussed it.

Personally, no, i do not believe using those words in those ways is against the rules. I do feel that using the word gay in a perjorative manner is in poor taste and indicates more about the person who uses it than the object it's being applied to, but I wouldn't moderate it in a vacuum. It's not a personal attack. There's a line to be drawn somewhere on such things. "Hate speech" that is intended to attack certain groups would cross it, in my opinion, but in general, I don't think taste and class are things we want to be moderating.

One note:

Quote:
Calling any person gay is of course a pejorative

While it can be used that way, calling someone gay should not generally be perjorative. It should be descriptive. For instance, Sasandra is gay. This is not an insult, it's a description of her sexual orientation. However, if you tell DFK! that "Dude, you're so **** gay," you're probably flaming. And by flaming I don't mean flamingly queer. Uh... I'm confused now.

Not what I meant Taly, I meant calling them gay as in lame.

If I said Taly is lame. It is an insult. If I use the definition of gay as a synonym for lame its still an insult. I guess its also descriptive in that I am of the opinion that Taly is lame but anyhoos.

And then, what about "ghey"?

Since I wouldn't moderate "gay" used in that manner, I'm wouldn't moderate "ghey" either.

Lame is a word offensive to all cripples!

I mean.... disabled Americans!

I mean.... less functionally mobile but still productive and contributory Americans!

I hated the term "differently abled". Always seemed like a cop out. I can hold my breath longer then most people, so I'm differently abled then others, but I don't get to park closer to the store and ride on those cool electric carts. Bastages.

Imo you should ban all normally used inflammatory words however allow inventive flammatory phrases. (e.g. your mother smells of elderberries).
At lease in that instance, even if it gets really bad, the rest of us can have a giggle at the insults.

I find it pretty offensive, but that shouldn't come as a surprise. I wouldn't like it if folks started using "nigger" and tried to make the excuse that it was somehow innocent. For example - "I totally nigger rigged my stereo yesterday".

It's just nasty language, and folks ought to have better sense than to use it.

The real question is - if someone uses such language, and another poster calls them out on it, will the staff see that as vigilante moderation?

No, because that's not a citation in the context of the board rules, which is what is defined as "vigilante moderation". It's simply perfectly fair observation and criticism.

Also, what about "retarded"? There are so many denonyms I could come up with that people probably don't even think twice about that are demeaning to one person or another. "Stupid" for instance? Why must we necessarily conflate lower intelligence with something that is "bad"?

You have the ability to express yourself well without need of pejorative or slang insult. Why would you feel the need to stoop to using them. It would reflect badly on you, a loss of prestige for no realistic gain of any kind. Why bother?

I'm going to point out that ignoring or disrespecting the moderation is against the rules. Specifically this one.

Ignoring Moderation
Any poster that deliberately ignores or disrespects a post made by a Moderator posting in that capacity will receive a warning or worse.

I'm locking this thread for excessive use of deragatory slang in the childish 'I can use it if I'm saying its bad' manner. Reopening this topic will be seen as disrespectful of the moderation and a warning will be issued. Continued disrespect will result in a temporary ban, length of time to be determined by the nature and level of the disrespect shown.

Really guys, use your standard issue common sense. You are not a gang of uneducated street thugs. You all have decent to excellent command of the English language. Don't bait and don't name call. Present your arguments with class and show others the respect you wish to receive yourself.

Note: This will be my moderation color. I can't stand the red lettering and refuse to use it.

After some (still ongoing) discussion in the moderator channel, we felt it was important to officially answer the legitimate questions this thread contains:

Elmarnieh wrote:

Would saying that something is lame (as in boring) be against the rules as an insult?

Elmarnieh wrote:

(1) No. (2) No. (3) No. None of these are against the rules. We aren't moderating poor taste.

Monte wrote:

Depends how it's done. Pointing out it's in poor taste or offensive to you isn't vigilante moderation, feel free to do so. Telling people they cannot or should not post that here, or that it's against the rules (regardless of whether it is), would be vigilante moderation.

Rafael wrote:

We're not policing such use of language in any form. Note, however, that if such use of language degenerates into an actual (non-sarcastic) bigoted rant, all bets are off.

That's all for now...maybe more to come on this.
