Same Era, different universes, similar genres. Its even rumored that JMS approached Paramount first with B5, got turned away, and then Paramount came up with DS9.

I'm firmly in the B5 camp. The trek universe always felt too sterile, too idealistic. The races had no *depth*. Basically, they had all their own *hats*. Klingons were Proud Warrior Race Guy, Romulans were all Magnificent Bastards, So were Cardassians (sorta, but they're our friends kinda now), Vulcans were all Spock, Bajorans were Human Lite... etc.

The races in B5 felt more developed to me. Each race had their individuals and one would be less able to stereotype based on appearance. Sure, Centauri were probably all backstabbing bastards, and Vorlons were all enigmatic zen masters, but they were individuals.

Tech wise, B5 was a *harder* sci fi than Trek. Space combat was more realistic, no gravity in space, no *dogfighting* per se. "Lasers" for the most part behaved as lasers should. Ship to Ship combat was generally at close range, as missile defenses seemed pretty effective. The bad guys were scary and believable for the most part. The Shadow Menace > The Dominion ;)

Sheridan could captain rings around Sisko. After all, Sisko was the Chosen one! (The Sinclair Equivalent ;) )
Ivanova > Major Kira
Garibaldi > Odo
Franklin < Bashere But Franklin was more human (if that makes sense)
Lyta > Dax > Talia... And there, the comparisons kinda break down. There weren't really any "Ambassadors" on DS9. There's no Quark on B5, nor are there Jakes or Noggs or Quark's useless brothers. Which, is really a good thing. To me, they just felt like forced comedic effect guys. (Ferengi have the "Greedy" hat.)

As villains, the Shadows > *. Psi Corps > The Cardassians ;)

Emotionally, the B5 series was more gripping... Hard to describe, but DS9 never really pulled me in. I gave it something like 2 seasons, but I never was as enthralled with it than B5.

But, as this is Wankery at best, I'll stop here and just say B5 > DS9. ;)

I could never get past the really horrible production quality of B5.

If felt like it was put on by high school play company.

I tried going back and watching it as so many folks love it, but it did not age well at all.

Firefly had space cowboys. Bet you weren't ready for that.

anime is in its own category. And in the category of Anime....

cowboy beebop >*

I seriously enjoy cowboy beebop more than Kenshin, Vampire Hunter D, Fist of the North Star, Space Battleship Yamato, etc.

DS9 was my favorite Trek. I think mainly because it had an ongoing storyline, rather than random freakish aliens of the week.

The improved the overall look of B5 after season 1, but it's been a while since I've watched it.

And Cowboy Bebop is sweet.

Having seen all seasons of both I can't choose. B5 and their production value was awful the first 2 seasons and the acting was wooden. DS9 took forever to get past standalone episodes and create an arc. Both in their prime were epic though.

BSG is still the greatest space station epic though.

If you can make it to the middle of season 2 of B5, you're golden. That's when it really takes off.

I don't think I've ever seen the B5 finale. I don't know any geeks that have the full seasons. Same for DS9.

Wwen I watched the whole series (including the crappy spin-off Paladin) and the movies for B5. If you have access I highly recommend it, the ending was fantastic and it was one of the standalone movies IIRC.

Could you record yourself acting out the entire last season and save somewhere? That'd be swell, thanks. :D

Same here. And, it was only after my wife got them for me on DVD that I allowed her to get rid of my VHS copies. Some of those movies I still only have on VHS (and the first episodes of the abortive sequel series, too).

Sure, production values sucked, acting was often wooden, but, crap, the story does carry it along. He (JMS) did have an arc in mind the whole time, and really did pioneer that for a lot of other series. How many other series introduce something in the first season and then come back to four years later - and know they're going to come back to it? (And pull it off?!)

The best space combat ever, too. I've watched some of the episodes with space battles repeatedly. The fight between the Centauri and Narn ships in "A Word from our Sponsor" is one of my favorites, even if it only lasts 30 seconds or so. Oh, and "No Surrender, No Retreat" Season 4 - even better, mass space battles. Might have to go home and watch that tonight.

Darksiege - Sinclair leaves at the end of Season 1. I think he was always meant to leave the show, but not quite that early. But, yeah, it's sad that Michael O'Hare (Sinclair) makes Bruce Boxleitner (Sheridan) look like the Richard Burton of sci fi.

As for the movies - you really should see "In the Beginning." It's a great flick, really.

Paladin - The spinoff series was actually "Crusade." I think it had a lot of potential - I remember one of those episodes just blew me away - but it just got ruined by TV politics and such.

I've been avoiding this thread for fear of falling into wankery. I have failed.
