...was, like the original version, quite terrible.

Having realized it would be bad before hand, my friends and I laughed our way through the whole thing. If you expect cheese, it's got loads of it. If you're expecting a good movie, stay away.

Yea, after reading nothing but bad reviews I figured I would wait. One bad movie a year is enough for me.

If you thought the first one was actually a good movie, you probably won't like this one. If you thought the first movie was hilarious, you'll laugh at this one too, for some of the same reasons. Basically it's terrible.

What was so horrible about this movie? My son and I just got back and both enjoyed it. It's a special effects action flick with a Greek mythology theme. Were folks expecting something else?

I didn't see what was wrong with it. I enjoyed it myself. It wasn't an accurate portrayal of Greek Mythology, but neither was the first. It was a good action flick, with decent characters, and IMHO, very good special effects. As much as I loved the first one, it is pretty painful to try and watch these days. It hasn't aged well at all. I would not have a problem watching this one again. I could definitely see myself buying this one when it comes out on DVD.

I remember the original version of this movie, made in the early 80s (I think). The fight between Perseus and Medusa was the best part, thanks to Harryhausen. The only other thing that sticks in my mind about that movie was that Perseus had a mechanical owl named Buboe as a sidekick. Yeah, name your greek mythology pet machine after a swollen lymph node; that'll draw me right in.

Haven't seen the new one yet. I've read that I should skip the 3-D, since they added it in afterwards and the effect isn't worth the extra moola for a 3-D ticket.

Or it could be that Bubo is a genus name for owls...

I know that now, because I looked it up. But how many people would know that off the top of their head? My main complaint was that is was a mechanical owl. In a greek mythology setting. But it was a Harryhausen movie so I mostly forgave all that.

Probably about as many people as would know it could also refer to a swollen lymph node. I suspect 90% of the people that saw the movie assumed it was a term of endearment or just a name.

For those that are familiar with greek mythology, specifically Hephaestus, a mechanical owl would not be out of place. Of course, automatons existed during the Hellenistic period anyway.

I would take it you are unfamiliar with Hephaestus; expecially in the Movie Baron Munchausen then?

I actually am fairly familir with greek mythology; I just didn't remember that Hephaestus was in the movie as well. I must've missed that part. It's been a long time since I've seen it. I really just don't remember the mechanical owl from the mythological story of Perseus. I think I saw the owl as an attempt to R2D2 the movie.

I don't know that Hephaestus was in the movie (I don't remember the original very well, and haven't seen the new one), but he's relatively closely tied to Perseus, regardless.

Athena ordered Hephaestus to make the mechanical duplicate of her pet owl, rather than give the pet to Perseus as she was ordered by Zeus.

But even if he wasn't in the movie, the concept, and actual implementation, of automatons existed in Hellenistic Greece, and that ability was often linked with Hephaestus.

I don't recall that particular mechanical owl from more traditional myth either, but the concept existed and was a "realistic" story line (realistic in it was derived from the time period and abilities of the myth).

We had to see it in 3D, as the theatre we picked only had it that way. (We were short on time and it's almost impossible to find free nights.) 3D effects were almost negligible - more were in the credits than the rest of the movie, or so it seemed.

I was disappointed that the goddesses didn't get even a single line in the movie. Some Athena action would have been nice.

I had this objection for the longest time about stuff like Disney's Hercules too. But it was pointed out, quite accuratly, that these myths themselves dont form a coherent mythos. There is no single source for anything, no canon, and it was traditional to retell the stories in many different ways and the events/characters were changed. These 'modern retellings' are as much in the spirit of the original mythology as anything.

I liked it... lots of special effects and blood and gore... Totally mindless, just how I like my movies ^-^

LTTP, but finally Netflixed it.

Enjoyable, but . . . safe.

Very nice visual effects, but the movie felt short, like they were trying to rush it.

Visually very fun. Story-wise, was a little weak
