I was listening to the radio this morning and heard some doctor talking about how bad soy was...that it was full of toxins, estrogen, and was one of the worst foods ever. He even claimed that baby boys being fed soy based formula would wind up with the brain chemistry of a girl.
I googled it and read a few different articles that do say its bad for you, like this one: http://www.drlam.com/opinion/soyandestrogen.asp

Quote:
The Chinese and Japanese have known about the toxicity of soy for centuries. Soy contains a variety of toxic chemicals, which cannot be fully metabolized by the body, unless it undergoes a long cooking, or fermentation process. Unfermented soy contains phylates, which acts as an anti-nutrient and blocks the body’s absorption of minerals from the gastro intestinal track. It also contains enzymes inhibitors that reduce protein digestion. Processed soy protein contains carcinogens such as nitrates, lysinoalanine, as well as a large group of anti-nutrients not found in traditional soy consumed in Asia. It also lacks calcium and causes a deficiency of vitamin D, both of which are not conducive for bone building.

I always thought soy was the healthiest food ever...

Anyone know more about this?

Yes, it is in fact very unhealthy for you, it's loaded with a chemical that mimics estrogen, so much so that feeding a baby soy milk is the equivilant of giving them 2 birth control pills a day. it also causes increased risk of breast cancer and brain damage and is loaded with chemicals in general, it's one of those horible things that most people think is good when it's really not, i'm very consious of my soy intake and won't eat anything that soy is at the top of the ingredients list.

This contradicts the idea that it's bad for you. ;)

Seriously, the only soy I can tolerate, anyway, is "soy sauce" on various asian foods when appropriate.

Soy is perfectly healthy under normal consumption, fermented or otherwise. Dr. Lam's little diatribe is poorly documented and selective in its information. He leaves out a few important facts: breast cancer and thyroid issues only show an increase when the diet lacks sufficient iodine. The problem is really only an issue for vegans, who generally fail to acquire enough iodine for healthy body function.

I thought this was going to be that article where they say soy turns you gay.

Great...now my sons are going to be gay (/Seinfeld voice: not that there's anything wrong with it), just because their little tummies could digest soy easier than cow. Does the breastfeeding cancel it out? I know I like boobies.

Going with Khross. Like the "soy makes you gay" tripe, it smacks of alarmist, reactionary claptrap.

I drink soy milk (well, rice milk preferably, soy milk when I can't get it) because I'm somewhat lactose intolerant. I'm not terribly sensitive (except to certain foods; mozzarella cheese, I miss you terribly), but enough to make me very wary of excess dairy consumption.

/goes back to his chai frappe with soy

I am not sure if you like Almonds or not.. but the Wal Mart grocery stores near us has been carrying Almond milk lately. It is better tasting than rice or soy.... and goes great with cookies.

I recently purchased my first box of almond milk. I thought I was buying the vanilla flavor, but I apparently purchased "original." It was...bracing. I don't think it's bad, it was just...I dunno, a lot stronger than I was expecting? Phe loves it; I think I could like it, but it may be an acquired taste that I need to reconcile.

Phe has this thing where she pours vanilla almond milk over sliced frozen fruit, and it crystallizes on them and is apparently very tasty.

ooh.. I am going to need to try the frozen fruit thing.

I did not care for the vanilla almond milk, but I love Vanilla and Chocolate soy.

Everything is bad for you. There's always some new study saying why something is now bad for you. A few years from now, it will be forgotten and claimed good for you.

I'm convinced that people who publish studies on health today don't know jack shiite muslims. They just publish stuff to shock people into listening/reading them and thus make money.

Pretty much agree with Numbuk. Almost everything you can buy these days has something that's been proven somewhere that is bad for you.

For a little evidence of my own, my son was lactose intolerant when he was born, we had to give him soy milk. He's five (six next month) currently, and is very much a boy. He enjoys basically any sport I introduce him to, he likes to wrestle, the best thing to do with toys is make them fight, etc, etc. I wouldn't be terribly worried about it.

Well, keep an eye on him and keep us updated. Research has shown that soy based man boobs don't come in until they are at least six and a half.

I eat soy. If that tells you anything. First ingredient in Bac-O's: "defatted soy".

Darn rumors! So vague, they are...
A rumor or rumour is often viewed as "an unverified account or explanation of events circulating from person to person and pertaining to an object, event, or issue in public concern" However, a review of the research on rumor conducted by Pendleton in 1998 found that research across sociology, psychology, and communication studies had widely varying definitions of rumor. Thus, rumor is a concept that lacks a particular definition in the social sciences. But most theories agree that rumor involves some kind of a statement whose veracity is not quickly or ever confirmed. In addition, some scholars have identified rumor as a subset of propaganda, the latter another notoriously difficult concept to define. A pioneer of propaganda studies, Harold Lasswell defined propaganda in 1927 as referring "solely to the control of opinion by significant symbols, or, to speak more concretely and less accurately, by stories, rumors, reports, pictures, and other forms of social communication." Rumors are also often discussed with regard to "misinformation" and "disinformation" (the former often seen as simply false and the latter seen as deliberately false, though usually from a government source given to the media or a foreign government).Rumors thus have often been viewed as particular forms of other communication concepts.

So is like a rumor propaganda or the other way around? I dunno. But Bac-O's are vegan, for what it's worth, though I may be pescetarian...
