...but I knew without a doubt I was going to piss off my wife, but I did it anyway.

Short background: female 18, daughter, my wife, mother in law
18 goes "you're not the boss of me" and the whole chain breaks.

years go by, nobody talks to one another, links are being repaired, but my wife thinks she isn't appreciated for what's she's become and a mother who can't come to grips with the fact that her first born took her on in business and beat her at the game. Mother daughter issues. I'm sure they're common ones.

So, mother calls a bunch of folks together from all over an hour away from our house over the weekend at a hotel with a view. Could have handled the job at our place ... and my wife could have showed off our house to the family...but suspects that mom has agendas. Probably does, I don't care.

Everybody breaks up, goes home, case closed.

HOWEver, my family has a tradition of calling when you get home from some function to the matriarch in charge at the time. You just do.

More to follow.

Just a "how did your weekend go" kinda thing.

ANYway, after we get home yesterday from the family ting, I leave to get dairy queen while my wife jacks into do some work at megacorp Internationale. She cries quietly a few times over what happened, how she feels, stuff like that. "mom hasn't even got the interest to come see my new house". you get the picture.

I say something stupid. "does she know that she's welcome here". I think it's a valid question. I don't get a clear answer that makes any sense, but I have to go get DQ... so I leave.

Are the daughter, mother, wife and mother-in-law the same person?

I'm guessing the mother-in-law is a separate individual, but the other three are one person.

As I'm sitting in line at DQ, I think to call and say we got home OK. It's just how I was raised. However, I know this will piss off my wife. I figure I am pretty safe as long as I don't color outside the lines.

So, I call, tell mom-in-law we got home ok, enjoyed the visit, we should get together sometime why don't you bring Grandma over for a stay some weekend when you get a chance.

3 people

my stepdaughter, 18
my wife
my wife's mother

the story includes this: There was a lot of drama between grandmother/daughter(my wife) and mother(my wife) and daughter(18 yr old) when 18 year old was 18 year old and one day. The 18 year old is presently 21 yr. old.

Can't you keep it straight? :)

oh, and there's wife's father, but he's more in the background of this. Where I should be if I had one cell in my brain that was connected to the phone talking to his mother-in-law.

My mother in law jumped at the chance to visit. They've only had a couple of conversations in the last 3 years. and I invited her to visit without telling my wife. SO, I told my wife I invited her mother to visit.

I'm in trouble. Not an unusual thing, in itself. I'm in trouble to some extent all the time. It's the kinda llama I am

You invited your mother in law to visit. Without consulting your wife?

You are a brave, brave man.

In most states that both a felony and grounds for a divorce with cause ... even the no-fault, no-contest states.

It was touch and go there for a bit - I think I dodged the bullet.

2 Hints

if you've done something wrong and want to be forgiven, act as though you've done more ill than you actually have.

If you want to be forgiven, ask nicely for it 'cause I don't think people forgive all that easily and your chances of being forgiven go up if you ask.

I'd do it again, but it was all for naught. My wife still isn't speaking to her mother. Oh well, such is life.

One of the finest things I ever did was get my wife and her mother to the point they were able to talk to each other again. After that they became friends, finally.

Good attempt though Taskiss, try again in a couple years.
