So if you want to get down to brass tacks, it wasn't your mother that put you through college, it was yourself. I'm certain that your mother helped, with encouragement and genetics at a minimum, but in the end if you hadn't been able to do well enough in school to get those scholorships you would have been screwed.

It was my mother. Work ethic counts for a lot more than any genetic gifts she could have given me.

Work ethic is certainly a huge part of being able to get a scholarship.

What I was getting at is that if someone's money has been taken for a social program in the first place, I fail to see the issue in them reclaiming what they put in (and no more than that) regardless of need or sloth or whatever. It's their money.

For instance, I'm paying who only knows how much into social security, and the most recent statement I got in the mail about it says that they expect it to be depleted in 2037, and that current estimates are (I think it said that) I'll see about $0.76 on each dollar I put in. Now, I've never taken a dime in aid myself, but given that the aid does exist, and it's coming from somewhere, I'm perhaps a little more lenient than many in gracing someone with my approval for their getting something back out.

Good post Jeryn and I dont disagree with anything you said. This part in particular made me think of what's going on now in Greece, where there are riots and now deaths from protesters who are angry that social programs and entitlements need to be cut because the nation is in utter fiscal shambles.

We are sold this idea that we'll get free this and safety net that. It is sometimes a slow creep punctuated by large strides. The people I know dont expect to see any of the Social Security money they've put in. At least not all of it. Yet what realistic choice to we have but to pay into it? Socialized healthcare the same thing. Are we to trust our government is better than the Greeks? The EU bailed them out to the tune of 144 billion, That's a fraction of our latest stimulus package. If that sort of thing happens to us nobody will be bailing us out, even if they were inclined to do so.

Eh I'm babbling now, probably should have been a separate discussion ;)

I think it begins with a boy having a figure of what a man should be and learning that men do for themselves.

I can't argue with this, but only because I'm not sure what you mean.

That's two quotes for the famous quote thread from you in two days. You're on a hot streak!

In the same thread no less!

You can't stop "The Rynar"... you can only hope to contain him.

If this is where it ended that would be one thing. But now you have people who are second and third generation welfare recipients who have never contributed to the system draining the resources we are given no choice but to contribute.

Not to mention that if it was only there as a resource for those who paid into it, it would serve those who paid into it better to eliminate it completely, such that they could use the money for private investment and savings, and enjoy a much better rate of return than anything the government is capable of providing.

However the majority of the people actually paying the federal tax burden likely do understand their importance.

Federal taxes are mandatory and people pay it because it's part of the tax system. I'd probably say it's only a minority of people who actually understand where all their taxes go and what %. Even in Aust where voting is mandatory, the majority of the people cbf to educate themselves on what they are voting for let alone in the US where people simply don't turn up to vote.

Our wonderful bail out thingys happened because the majority of people were irresponsible with their money (I also include the culture of over using credit in this category) and china did not take the full hit due to high saving rates. (this is a world thing and not just a US thing)

If every penny you've ever paid into this was given back to the people tomorrow. Do you believe the majority would put it into a saving fund? or simply use it on luxuaries like it was a free hand out rather than their own hard earnt money?

You're preaching to the choir with me Rynor, however I am a firm believer that the majority of humans are simply sheeples who are more happy being ignorent than take responsibility.

Fewer than 50% of Americans pay federal taxes. The ones who do, do so because they have a greater degree of finacial savy and personal responsibility than those who don't.

Are you including those who are not eligible for work in that stat? From everything i've read, it seems the federal tax is mandatory... I r confuzzled.

The way our tax code is structured the bottom 50%+ have no burden, as in they are not required to pay.

Even though I agree with you Rynar on the fundamental problem, be careful of your figures. 47% of tax payers pay no federal income tax due to credits, deductions, or bracket. They still have payroll taxes and such deducted. See this link for more info: CNN Report on Tax Burden. 38% of people have no tax burden or a negative tax burden.

I'd like to go on record as saying I don't even care anymore. I have enough problems in my own life that I can take control of, I don't have time to agonize over what the yokels vote for. It affects me, but my point of view is a small minority of what America believes in that it doesn't even matter. I'll muddle through somehow, and in the mean time, there's a librarian working at the bar I need to hit on. Excuse me.

My little brother got his undergrad and grad degree from there, my best friend got his undergrad there and my brother in law is working on his grad degree from there.

Apparently it runs in my family.
