More evidence that leftism, and even the most vauge support of centerist leftism, is being rejected whole-sale in this country.

Quote:
Utah Republicans Oust Sen. Bob Bennett in Anti-Incumbent Rage
by Tom Diemer

Sen. Bob Bennett, a conservative who fell out of favor among even more conservative Republicans in an anti-incumbent rage, failed to get his party's nomination in Utah Saturday, making it very difficult for him to seek a fourth term.

The gangly, bespectacled senator finished third in the second round of balloting at the Republican state convention in Salt Lake City, sealing his fate, the Salt Lake Tribune reported. Businessman Tim Bridgewater and lawyer and Tea Party favorite Mike Lee finished first and second respectively and will face off in a June 22 primary.

When results were announced there were shouts of "he's gone, he's gone," as some GOP delegates waved "Do Not Tread On Me" flags -- a favored symbol of the aggressively conservative Tea Party movement.

In defeat, Bennett becomes the first incumbent Utah senator to be deprived of his party's nomination since Democrats ousted Sen. William King in 1940 over his opposition to the New Deal, the Tribune said.

Bennett, 76, was in tears, saying "the political atmosphere obviously has been toxic and it's very clear that some of the votes I have cast have added to the toxic environment." He was faulted, in particular, for supporting the Troubled Asset Relief Program -- the so-called bailout bill. He could yet try a write-in candidacy, but it would be a huge challenge.

Dont' know enough about this guy or his opponent to pass judgement. It does sound initially promising. There wasn't a lot of opposition on the republic ballot in ohio this week, and that was kind of disheartening for me.

A shame that Tea Baggers have so much support.

And he's right about toxicity. Current Conservative ideals are toxic to our nation.

I don't know whether to laugh or cry at the lengths the author (I refuse to call this person a journalist) has gone to to try to conjure a schoolyard bully image of the primary electorate.

"Bespectacled" and "gangly?" "Aggressive" conservatives? Oh, of course, cause these are the guys I've heard about bringing guns to their rallies! And look at that, they're picking on the nerdy kid with glasses and making him cry...

I hear if you make vague, pointless complaints about how things you disagree with are "bad", you can reassure yourself and convince those who already agree with you.

Really? Fiscal responsibility is toxic? Transparent governance is toxic? Who are you listening to that you're suddenly some politically outspoken proto-European utopian idealist that somehow thinks everything wrong with this country has to do with real conservatism? More importantly, why is it so significant that you can't distinguish between Neo-Conservatism and libertarianism?

It seems to me that whatever koolaid you're drinking is filled with all sorts of false factionalism and populism that you really don't know enough to make these vague, condescending comments you continue to make.

How and why? Defend your assertions logically, and explain how fiscal conservatism is a bad thing. Furthermore, please explain how the corporatist/neo-mercantilist economic model has been a success anywhere it's been tried.

Well, it took long enough, but we've found a replacement who finds enjoyment in name-calling once they've found a name that aggravates people.

I don't like fiscal conservatism. Without centrally planned economics with the backbone designed around consumers spending borrowed money, how else would I be able to meet underwhelming women while flossing at the mall?

Better yet, this replacement posts absurd charges, as if holding some intellectual authority, then flees various threads screaming, citing his basic reason as: "When I try to defend myself I look like a **** idiot." (paraphrased) I think he may have actually managed to "improve" on the origional.

I'm not sad to see him go, being a Utahn myself.

He's done a few things that have riled people here in Utah, one of the biggest being that he originally promised to only serve two terms and was now running for his fourth. That didn't sit well with many.

I'd really just like to see this happen to any incumbent with more than two terms under their belt, no matter the political affiliation or where they're from. Our federally elected politicians are far too comfortable with where they're at, and I'd like to see them actually have to work for their jobs for once.

I don't know, but as far as I can tell, they were paved into a parking lot for Heckfire.

Jocificus; DFK! would like to discuss with you his voting mantra going on a decade now.

Guys, FFS, please put a lid on the anger when someone posts something you disagree with. Of even if someone posts something you find offensive. I know it's a difficult thing to pull off, but dogpile on every point of view that differs from our own? I don't think I'd find much enjoyment in reading a message board with homogeneous opinions.

Please - relax.

Holy Misleading Post Titles Batman!

Bennett has a lifetime 84 rating with the American Conservative Union which hardly qualifies as moderate.

He did not lose a primary. He lost at the Republican State Convention where there were approximatley 3,500 delegates. 3,500 people out of 2,784,572 does not count as "whole-sale" rejection.
