The Glade 4.0

I have to serve from May 3 - June 11 (although I have asked for the last week of that term off for a previously-planned vacation).

Today was the first day I was actually called to be considered to jur.

It was some car hitting a ped case, where a local college student in her early 20s hit some guy in his early-mid 30s. The girl was a Psych major and the guy apparently had a history of drugs (mostly MJ), and had "developed" an addiction to pain killers as well as domestic abuse charges "as a result of the collision." Guy also had some neck and head injuries. The girl looked to be on the verge of tears the whole time and the guy looked like a depressed zombie. Had some accident re-creation expert lined up as well as medical professionals and a police officer.

Anyway, they called in about 25 people and eliminated about 10 right off via random selection (had a Bingo tumbler and little numbered ball thingies).

Then both the judge's deputy and the judge herself gave us a quick run down of what to do and expect before handing it over to the prosecuting attorney and defense.

And there's where things got really boring . . .

Each lawyer asked us a series of questions we raised our hand to and were asked to specify if needed. Voir Dire I believe the process is called?

Then each team went into private chambers and chose who to recuse. This seemed to take forever.

Turns out they voired me from the jury, so I got to go back to work. Think they ended up with like 6 or 7 people as the jury (which I hear is the norm for civil cases).

Got there at 8:40, left at 10:15.

I was dreading this duty when I first got selected, but it actually seems pretty interesting. Now if only the voir dire process wasn't so damn boring.

For the first week that's what happened to me, too. Hopefully that trend will continue.

Tomorrow is local election day, so I think court is closed.

Last time I got called for Jury, During the selection process I mentioned jury nullification. Haven't been called since. 8 years now.
