Anyone else still watching? So far, the new season (2 episodes in) has been really good. Really surprising turn in the first episode.

Still watching it yes.
Was wondering how the pulled off the Charlie scene so easily and quickly compared to the change we saw prior (beginning of Season 2 opener).
I do like the idea that the Fringe division will be more proactive than reactive.
I do like the way that there's been more character growth between Walter and Peter overall and hope it continues.

I did find the fact the government committee tried to shut them down to be weirdly similar to the X-Files...(end of Season1 X-Files Vs. Begninning of Season 2 Fringe).

I dunno. I tried to get into this one and I couldn't. I recognize that I have this limitation though. There is good fiction out there that I just can't bring myself to pick up, much to the chargin of others.

If you couldn't get into Fringe based on its first five episodes, I would heartily suggest you give it a second chance. It picked up after that and became really good really quickly (a sentiment I echo with Dollhouse). It's a really good show.

I lost track of the show half way through the first season. My work schedule killed my TV watching.

First 2 episodes are up on hulu - http://www.hulu.com/fringe

Most shows take a bit to find their voice. Have you ever gone back and watched season one of star trek : The Next Generation again? One of my favorite shows of all time, but most of that season, yuck.

If I like something about a show I'll give it a bit to mature. I really like Olivia Dunham as a character, so that kept me watching.

<3 Fringe. I hope they can maintain a good balance between the Mythology and episodic content.

I haven't watched an episode yet, but with all I've read, especially FarSky's comments, I want to.

And your statement makes it sound like they're going for the proven formula that the X-Files did so well.

From what I saw before I lost step with it about 2/3s through season 1, they tended to mix a little bit of mythology content into each episodic, um, episode. So you'd have the episodic story, and in the course of it, about 5 minutes' worth of mythology leads or headscratchers would turn up.

So, the X-files REDUX?

No, it's similar to the X-Files in style, but not content. It's more science-driven and it has nothing to do with aliens and missing relatives. I don't want to give anything away, but I would say it's got elements of Sliders in it, too. It's also more comedic than X-Files was. X-Files took itself too seriously at times, whereas Fringe has the ability to poke fun at their characters.

However, they're very aware of their similarity to X-files. One of my friends literally called me the first time he saw the show and said "Hrmm, an introduction sequence with words flying by about strange and paranormal activity, X-files anyone?"

The first episode of this season, they had a quick shot of someone watching the X-files on their computer monitor, so I'm pretty sure they're happy to be carrying that torch.

It's clearly optimism and aspiration -- this show would be ecstatic to be where that lightning struck twice for Fox.

X-files was a dark comedy. If you weren't frequently laughing hysterically while watching the X-Files, I think you missed the point. That said, Fringe is a bit more up-front about its comedic elements, Walter Bishop being the driving force behind all of them. X-files was more subtle (but often funnier than anything Walter Bishop has done.)

For the record, they referenced X-Files in the premier of this season (in a more convincing way than showing it on a TV). In the season 2 premiere, during Broyles meeting with the senate to determine the future of Fringe division, the senator compared Fringe division with "the old X designation," both of them draining federal funds by investigating the unknown and unexplained. It seems J.J.Abrams was paying tribute to, and unofficially linking these two shows into the same universe (both owned by Fox, which makes it less of a legal quagmire to do so.)

Just watched the first two episodes of this new season on Hulu. Very entertaining, although

Spoiler:
the mutant baby reminded me too much of that silly detachable conjoined twin from an X-Files episode.

I think I'm hooked on watching it weekly now though. The cast seems solid, especially John Noble. I'm just hoping they post the third episode on Hulu before the 4th airs this Thursday.

But since I don't feel like watching all of season one, can anyone fill me in on the major points I've missed?

Huh? There have only been two episodes aired from this season thus far. The third episode is airing Thursday night.

Also, here's a quick spoiler of the first season from Wikipedia:

Spoiler:
Fringe follows the exploits of FBI special agent Olivia Dunham, mad scientist Walter Bishop, and his son, jack of all trades, Peter Bishop as they investigate aspects of fringe science (rare diseases, chimeras, transhumans with psychic abilities, teleportation, and so forth). All over the world, a series of apparent experiments collectively referred to as "the Pattern" (e.g., a newborn baby who rapidly ages and dies within a few minutes, a bus full of passengers trapped in a strange resin, like mosquitoes trapped in amber) are occurring for reasons unknown. Olivia, Peter, and Walter are in charge of investigating these strange events to determine their source. Connected to the Pattern is Massive Dynamic, a leading global technology company that holds the patents for a number of new and important technologies. Their enemy is ZFT, a bioterrorist organization which is orchestrating all of the strange occurrences in order to prepare for a destructive technological singularity. Tying both sides together is a nootropic drug, called Cortexiphan, that was developed by Walter and his partner, William Bell (now chairman of Massive Dynamic), which Olivia and a number of others were treated with as children. The first season closes with Olivia meeting William in a parallel universe where, among other differences, the World Trade Center was not destroyed by the September 11 attacks.

There certainly were funny dark moments on the X-Files, but I still think the creators took themselves too seriously. There are moments on the X-Files where they set it up just enough to make you believe it could happen in real life. I think Walter Bishop is an entire character devoted to making fun of the fantastical, crazy element of the show and I love it. I also never thought I'd like Joshua Jackson after he did Dawson's Creek (what a horrible show), but he's a great foil for his father. So far I'm enjoying Fringe more than I enjoyed X-Files (and I liked the X-Files). It doesn't hurt that it appeals more to my inner science geek, though.

Everyone except Olivia is wonderfully cast. I don't care for Olivia though.

Spoiler:
I am so sad about Charlie Frances. He was the ultimate nice-guy. :(

I do like how he linked the series with the X-Files in the premier, but now I'll be perpetually hoping for a cameo from Gillian Anderson.

From the two episodes I've seen I really like Olivia. What exactly don't you like about the character/actor ? (She looks a bit like Cate Blanchett)

Olivia was a bit cold in the beginning, but the show has humanized her a lot since its inception.

I don't find she has Cate Blanchett's class, but something about her acting...oh hell, who knows, it could be the writing, which means I'm not treating Anna Torv particularly well. Either way, Olivia Dunham is boring.

I don't find her american accent all that convincing, either, it sounds affected. The Aussie in her doesn't show through, but what's we end up seeing is neither Aussie nor American.

Does this do anything to raise your esteem of her?
