Don't think I ever used the words "suffers," "sucks," or "is behind" in this instance. In fact, I don't know who you're quoting at all.

I just relayed my own personal experience. And my personal experience is that, in general, most Linux users I communicate with (and it's been many) prefer their OS complicated. They prefer it not being consumer friendly, as they do not want Average Joe Windows User joining their club. They wear their Linux preference like a "Members Only" jacket from the '80s. If your experience with the average Linux user is different, I would be happy to visit that world and see it with my own eyes.

It's a powerful OS. I like the fact I can pretty much edit any file as I damn well please and that the CLI is light years ahead of anything Microsoft ever put out. But again, my whole point of the original post came down to Consumer Friendly deployment and marketing. Open Source phones have it. Linux doesn't. That was my point.

Can you install WoW or Steam and all that right out of the box? As in, I just installed the OS and now I'm installing WoW to play, no other steps required? Because if there are more steps required, it is 100% useless when I can just use Windows instead and not have to jump through additional hoops.

No additional hoops? So you no longer have any cause to, say, download video drivers and install them? Make no mistake, there is additional pain beyond simply installing the Windows OS. It's just pain that you've been conditioned to accept and find normal.

1) Install Win7
2) Run Windows Update for drivers
(optional)
3) Profit

Does Linux have an equally-easy process? I have to say, the notion of anything in Win7 being called "painful" is humorous.

So that sounds much better than I'm aware of Windows being. However, I must admit a complete lack of familiarity with Win7. So I have some questions. Are the drivers available through Windows Update the vendor provided drivers? Are the drivers available through Windows Update kept current? What does Win7 do in the event it does not recognize a chipset?

Linux's process for drivers is pretty much to make sure as much as possible is available in the kernel tree and compilable as a module. There are a handful of exceptions, most notably video and wireless networking, although there are non-proprietary modules available even for many in those categories. It's pretty slick and easy in Ubuntu to get restricted drivers up and running.

So, particularly with graphics drivers, this means that they may not be *the latest* ones, but they do stay pretty current.

The only thing I've ever plugged into my computer that Windows Update didn't have a driver for, was some no-name USB wifi adapter. Everything else pretty much "just works"

I believe so, because I think it's the distribution method for the Linux Source engine dedicated server. Don't quote me on that, though, and I doubt there's any non-DS content for Linux.

Kind of deceiving when Android is on like 30 handsets and Apple OS is on, what, 4? It's almost inevitable.

The reason that android has suprpassed Apple is because the platform is more open and accessible (and probably a lot cheaper to develop for). This explains the larger variety and the larger total number.

Are you saying you don't think Apple is trying to make the iPhone the dominant platform? I think they are (they sure liked to brag about it before the Android platform took over).

I guess you could argue that it's all about the bottom line. Googles motivation for making the Android OS wasn't making money from direct sales, it was getting the platform in as many peoples hands as possible, and the subsequent advertising revenue, with the added benefit of increasing access to the 'information' they so covet.

I think we agree with each other, man. I'm not trying to argue anything. I'm saying that with Android on so many devices, it was inevitable that it would pass the iPhone OS sales just by brute force.
