now that I have a PS3... I am surprised to see that it is still losing to Nintendo.

Does this include game sales or just the consoles?

Numbers on top are just console sales.

Numbers below are purely software.

As for Nintendo dominance -- I think it's all about accessibility. Nintendo products, mostly due to software focus and price point reach a wider audience.

But I agree, PS3 >>>>>> Wii.

Wow. The NSMB sales vs. the GoW3 sales must be pretty humiliating for PS3 fanboys. I mean, that's like losing your opening weekend to Titanic a year after Titanic came out.

But GoW3 dominated in March (its debut month) and it's at 2.3mill copies sold in just two months, so it's not like it's hurting for sales or under-performing.

From Joystiq.com (March software numbers):

Quote:
1. God of War 3 - PS3 - Sony - 1.10M
2. Pokemon SoulSilver version - DS - Nintendo - 1.02M
3. Final Fantasy XIII - PS3 - Square Enix - 828.2K
4. Battlefield: Bad Company 2 - 360 - EA - 825.5K
5. Pokemon HeartGold version - DS - Nintendo - 761.2K
6. Final Fantasy XIII - 360 - Square Enix - 493.9K
7. New Super Mario Bros. Wii - Wii - Nintendo - 457.4K
8. Battlefield: Bad Company 2 - PS3 - EA - 451.2K
9. Wii Fit Plus - Wii - Nintendo - 429.6K
10. MLB 10: The Show - PS3 - Sony - 349.2K

Sold over double NSMB.

And in its first 45 days, NSMB sold over 4 million. What's your point? I wasn't talking about last month. I was talking about NSMB's impressive staying power, compared to GoW3's pretty quick fall-off.

But some things have to be taken into consideration:

The DS has a much larger install base than the PS3 -- like almost 100 million more install base.

Mario is an icon that has been around for 20+ years.

The nature and content of NSMB is much more accessible compared to GoW3.

These factors alone will push NSMB sales much more than GoW's. For a non-Nintendo platform, GoW has sold very well.

Mario vs anyone else on any platform is always going to be skewed in Mario's favor.

Uh, just to clarify, he's talking about New Super Mario Bros on the Wii, the statistic in your figures up top. Not the DS original.

Ah yes, sorry.

My three points from above still stand tho -- just double the user base as opposed to triple.

I don't disagree that you've outlined, essentially, the *reason* NSMB(W, as FarSkee pointed out) is kicking butt.

I merely was pointing out that, no matter how impressive a game those guys thought they made, it must be humbling to realize they're getting their asses handed to them by an 8-bit character who jumps on things and walks right on an SD screen.

Ah, I see.

Hard to say.

I would like to think that anyone with any knowledge of the industry (esp. devs) would realize Nintendo's dominance this gen, and settle for a nice victory in the non-Nintendo sphere.

Interesting article about the current (and future?) state of Nintendo. Some of its statements seem wrong, concerning no new big games due out and Wii sales falling as a result of lower processing power, but the Nintendo-Apple thing may turn out to be something noteworthy in the future.

And Super Mario 64 has sold more than all 3 God of War games combined.

What exactly is anyone supposed to be embarrassed about?

There shouldn't be anything humbling about making GoW3, despite it not matching up to NSMB. The game is amazing, which is all that really matters. Sales matter, but the final product itself is nothing to feel sorry about.
