Name one country that doesn't do this. It's also really hard to tell when public debt becomes a "problem." Greece fell apart at government debt just over 100% of GDP, yet Japan is going to push its public debt over 200% of GDP this year and they're still chugging along.

Appeal to popularity is all you have. Stop defending immoral action simply because it is common.

You're right that it's an appeal to popularity, but immorality is not the issue. Stupidity is not immoral.
