Sure he did. He unintentionally lured Gandalf to Isengard. Much better than "I need to talk to the head of my order...He'll know what to do."

Yeah, my objection wasn't to losing Tom specifically, but it was rather to the Barrows, since the origin of the daggers is kind of important, you know.
Glorfindel, however, was sacrificed at the altar of hollow feminism. Poor guy. Such is the merit of the second most powerful Noldor remaining in Middle Earth (and one of only 3 known to have walked the shores of Valinor remaining), and a **** Prince in his own right.

No, no. The guy who made the Witch King flee from single combat, and *made* the prophecy of how he'd die, just gets cut out so the role can be filled according to affirmative action best practices.

And as for Radagast, he's a **** wizard. There were only 5, and only 3 even get names. Give the dude a break and let him get his one speaking scene in.

Hilarious discussion. Really just came here to support Mus, however. I hated Tom Bombadil, and always (probably purposefully) forget about him. Then I re-read the first book, and come across him again and get all annoyed with him, just like the first time. :D

Sounds like this is a film that ain't gonna be made for a while.

The movies are better than the books.

There. I said it, and I'd say it again if I had to.

That's just because you hate Faramir, Glorfindel, and Radagast.

Exactly what I would suspect of a dirty shadow knight who's jealous that rangers, paladins, and druids got heroes in the series, and not a decent SK in sight.

I've read of Faramir, and he's a far more interesting, balanced, and well-written character in the films. Jackson and crew understand character arcs and development...Tolkien, not so much. "So, everybody, there's this ring that corrupts all men who come by it...ah, except you, Ted. You're incorruptible. But everyone else of the race of men, you're assholes. But not Ted."

Glorfindel? Meh. Beefing up (metaphorically speaking) Arwen's roll was a much better decision. Though, granted, I don't think they followed through on that weird "she's lost the will to live" thing that was killing her.

The only one with a reasonable argument for inclusion/fidelity is Radagast, but honestly...do you need the films to be longer?

Good thing he wasn't mortal, nor a man, then. Eh?

Why was that a better decision? She's supposed to be an elf maiden background-mention-only, not a hoss warrior and major plot-changer.

Psh. I said *decent.* When was the last time you saw them slinging even minor magic? They're warriors with evil, tainted/magically poisoned blades and rings bound to the One Ring to **** with the bearer's head.

Everything FarSky just said.

I have my issues with the films (mostly in RotK), but they're from a cinematic standpoint, not "purist" standpoint. The simple fact is, while he had an incredible imagination and wove an excellent story, Tolkien's actual dramatic sense and ability to write characters was not even close to adequate. The movies were far, far better than the books.

(And yes, DFK, Faramir in the books was just a mortal man.)

Looking back, it looks like I misread Farsky to be talking about Bombadil when he was saying incorruptible.

You know why I thought that? Because Faramir wasn't. However, unlike his brother, but like his king, he didn't succumb to the temptation.

Guess you guys missed that part of the book.

Faramir wasn't incorruptable?

Last I checked, he was. I recall him having the ring, and saying something to the effect of "Meh, I dun want it."

Nope.

He was strongly tempted by its power, but turned it away. He wrestled with himself all night about it. So did Aragorn.

That was the point: the weak fell to it's power, and the kings of Numenor could overcome if they were pure. Boromir wasn't strong enough.

I don't think you can really compare books to movies, and be taken seriously.

And that's the point -- Faramir was a throwback to the old Numenorean line, whereas Boromir represented the diluted blood found throughout Gondor at the time. Faramir was wise (to know that he could not control such power unchanged, and thus was able to deny his temptation), while Boromir was the dumb warlord in the family. And it tortured Faramir that his father valued Boromir's martial skill and charisma as a leader of men to the point of ignoring Faramir's wisdom.

Wait a minute...isn't Jackson the Producer, too? Doesn't the producer generally hire the director? How can one be "close to finalizing a deal" with himself?

****. Knowing Jackson, he'll cut out Beorn. I will not stand for it if Beorn is not in the films. I already had to deal with Tom not being there, but I will personally murder Peter Jackson if he cuts Beorn out as well.
