When did Shel start sewing? I thought that was more a Tamaar thing?

The dancing might be fun as a physical skill, but the faux subservience to control your customers wasn't a part of the strong willed, many freckled redhead woman I met last fall.

Shel did Rennaisance Faires for many years. Sewing is a survival skill when you're a poor actor in an unpaid gig whose management requires that you maintain your costumes or you don't get to perform for them for free or at the most a pittance of pay.

Either that, or he had to do something to keep his wits about him while Taamar had him chained up in her dungeon. Mending her clothes would lessen the beatings.

Go for the first explanation, it is easier on the mind.

I started dating Taamar more or less at the commencement of my first Ren Faire season and thus, ended up not learning any of the crucial Rennie survival skills. I had intended to take up juggling, stick juggling, contact juggling, hackeysack, and even a musical instrument or two (possibly period!) but found myself wooed away from my life of leisure by the allure of indoor plumbing and cookies.

Here are some online dating messages back and forth that I found amusing. I don't use okcupid.com much anymore, but a couple girls messaged me recently. I'll put behind a spoiler since this isn't my thread, so read at your leisure. This girl is cute and I nearly messed it up by being too honest. But being honest is funny so I couldn't help it.

Hey Alex, my name is Kit! How are you? Acton may be kind of the middle of nowhere, but it looks nice, right? Plus you're right near Stow, and they have an apple picking place there that I used to go to all the time with my family when I was little. Are you from MA originally?

Hi Kit,

Thanks for your message. Acton is in a pretty area, but I grew up in Medway which is very similar. So it's not particularly appealing to me. I'd rather be in a place with lots of people my age. I go to the Harvard Square area a lot to hang out, and I'm moving to Somerville in a month.

I've never been to Stow and I don't think I've gone apple picking before... that sounds fun though! I was born in St. Louis and moved to Medway, MA when I was two.

What is silkscreening? I could Google it but I want you to tell me. :-P

-Alex

I'm so jealous that you're moving to Somerville. Okay, I've never been there, but I hear really good things about it that make me want to go there haha. I was in Porter Square today, and that's the closest I've gotten. But I don't know anyone in Somerville and so far no one wants to make the trek with me. I live in West Roxbury, so it's kind of a hike on the T.

Silkscreening is how they get images on a shirt, or whatever you want the image on. It's called screen printing too. You can make your own screens using nylon and embroidery hoops, but I think I'd be better off springing for a start-up kit for now and paying for someone to create the screens later on (it's about 30 bucks a screen, which isn't that bad for something that would come out better than if I did it), since I hope to be able to sell the stuff I make. That's basically how Johnny Cupcakes got started, except he paid a screen printing shop to create the screens from his designs and do the printing. And look at him now! He's doing great.

So how's your weekend going?

Jun. 7, 2010 – 4:11pm
Living in Somerville will be lots of fun! I can't wait. It's right next to Cambridge and my place is just 2 minutes by bus from Davis Square. That's kinda lame that you live far from the T!

My weekend went well. On Saturday I hung out with a girl and her friend... it was fun. I had met her a week ago by Harvard Square. This black guy who hangs out there offered to smoke weed with them, so they agreed, and we first followed him to Au Bon Pain where he stole a bottle of water. An employee yelled at him so we followed him out... we were then standing around when two cops made him go back and pay. Then we followed him to a grassy field and the two girls and him started smoking weed, and I reluctantly did it too. It was my third time ever. But it made me feel awful and tired, so I'm definitely never smoking again. I hate peer pressure!! Also I didn't like how the guy persistently stole the girls' attention from me, although it was kind of funny. He also was high on adderall. I never use drugs except those few times I smoked weed. And not happening again.

On Sunday I hung out with my future roommate, and we saw Iron Man 2. It was pretty good. We are secretly hooking up and she won't even tell her sister, which is amusing. However I had told my parents because they asked me, and yesterday I told my future roommate that I told my parents, and she got kinda upset. Oh well. She's 29 so I won't date her, even though she looks young for her age and is really cute.

I hope I wasn't too honest in this message, and that you will still write back.

Silkscreening sounds pretty interesting and a lot of fun! I don't know Johnny Cupcakes but I like his name.

How have you been doing?

-Alex

Jun. 7, 2010 – 7:07pm
Oh Alex, congratulations on sending me the most honest message I have ever received. Cracked me up, that guy sounds...interesting. Think he'll become a regular pal of yours? Haha. I've never smoked, only had a little contact high, but it made me happy and sleepy haha. Much like alcohol.

Dude, you're hooking up with your future roommate? Nothing good can come of this haha...and she won't tell her sister? What, she's going to get in trouble or something? Although I can relate, I was hooking up with this kid my brother went to high school with and I didn't want him to find out because my brother hates that him (and after spending time with him, I can see why, I consistenly want to punch him in the face).

I've been alright, but mostly played mom to my sisters the entire weekend. My parents went out Saturday night to engage in their social lives while I watched my sisters. But I saw Get Him to the Greek last night, which was hysterical, so at least the whole weekend wasn't lost. Plus Friday I went shopping and spent too much money...it's okay though, because I got sexy new shoes haha. And what girl doesn't love that?

They've been out all week here. It's nice that I cruise all the way to work without the school zone.
