Well, this is one way to react...

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v60oNUoHBYM

For the youtube impaired this is a student (looks to be maybe a freshman in college to me...) simply asking Rep Bob Etheridge (D. North Carolina) "Do you fully support the Obama Agenda". He responds by swatting at the camera, grabbing and holding the kids hand while repeating (about 30 times) "Who are you?" and "I have a right to know who you are". At one point he grabs the kid by the back of the neck and holds on with his arm around his shoulders.

What the heck. Was the congressman drunk? What on earth could make a man act like that?

Clearly, he does not react well to being asked his position on things, and thinks he shouldn't need to be held accountable (to the camera) when somebody dares to do so.

Really bizarre behavior though. I'd like to know what he was thinking.

Look at the close-up of his face. I'm pretty sure Mr. Congressman was drunk.

Then we can add drunk and disorderly to the assault charge for the Honorable Representative.

And I'm pretty sure I hope that every legal agency in the country comes in line behind this kid and demands the filing multiple criminal charges, including whatever public drunkenness statutes may apply if you're correct.

He's up for re-election this year ... something tells me he'll be in full-blown damage control over this.

Etheridge, who has represented North Carolina’s 2nd congressional district since 1997, is running for re-election against Republican Renee Ellmers, a registered nurse, in November. Political observers have predicted that the 68-year-old congressman will likely hold on to his seat.

Etheridge, a so-called moderate Democrat, voted in favor of President Obama's health care overhaul legislation as well as the Democrat's cap and trade bill.

It's too bad this was filmed a week or so ago, and he's just getting around "apologizing" now. Think the fact that he's "seen the video posted on several blogs" has anything to do with his sudden remorse?

To put this in perspective: Remember when Buzz Aldrin punched out that guy who came up to him with a camera and demanded to know if the moon landings were fake? Do you think he should go to jail for assault for that?

No

No, but then again nobody said they thought the Honorable Representative "should go to jail for assault" either.

Yeah, I don't recall the Buzz situation either... is there a video of it?

Buzz Aldrin is an elected representative of exactly who again? This doesn't exactly put it in much perspective.

Not even remotely the same situation, and while it may not stand up to strict legal standards, I believe Aldren was completely justified in his actions, and he'd be acquitted of any charges by a jury.

Given Aldrin's age and the fact that the younger man was up in his face and using "fighting words", he could easily make the case that he thought the younger man was about to assault him.

Wait, let me get this straight, DE: "I thought he was about to assault me" is a valid defense, in your eyes, for battery?

Regardless of DE's views, it is a valid legal defense.

Aldrin punching a guy who called him a coward and liar = awesome. Congressman grabbing a kid who asks "Do you fully support the Obama agenda" = *******.

I'm not a fan of the in your face "journalism" where some guy with a camera and microphone follows a person to their car or home and shouts questions in their face, but this wasnt an example of that. They asked a question and the guy went way over the top.

Aldrin on the other hand was justified in bashing that dude.

Yeah, if you perceive a threat to your personal well being, you can preemptively defend yourself. Of course, there are some qualifications involved, but you don't have to wait until actual, physical harm is done to you.

But assault is the perceived threat of battery. So if you think he might make you think he'll hit you, you can hit him?
