Micheal:

When you bargain collectively you are part of a collective. How some dissenting members might feel matters not a whit.

You have to be competative for your market if you want decent people.

Maybe that is the point Ror. He may not be able to fire employees as easily as he can push their wages to the point that they quit. After a month one counts the reduction in workforce and can continue closer to normal pay.

Terrible idea. With this method, you only lose employees that can quickly find another job. In other words, you only lose your good people.

In reality we are losing people that can retire, but didn't necessarily want to yet. One woman I work with ran the numbers and decided with the cuts the Governor is imposing she would be losing money to keep working and retired two years before she had planned to. With her goes a wealth of 'corporate' knowledge that would have been transferred to her successor at a saner time.

As i said, I don't think their protest will come to anything, and at this point it is just talk. These are most likely the people that seem to petition for grievances against their Union every contract negotiation. The group regularly tries to create a new Union to usurp the current one, a Union they would be in charge of - which fails every time. For the most part they are Fair Share members, not true union members.

In California you don't have to be a Union member to work for the State in Union Represented positions, but you do have to pay your Fair Share. Fair Share is a horrible concept where you have money (less than the Union dues, but not much less) go to the union whether you want it to or not. This pays for the non-Union members to be collectively bargained for, whether they want it or not.

I understand their dissent. I do not choose to join it.

The legislature not passing a budget is a foregone conclusion with the rules they have in place. California has extremely liberal cities and pretty conservative rural areas, there's no way these two groups are going to cooperate enough to get a 66% majority to pass a budget.

That would be a valid thought X, except for the fact that they, you know, pass a budget.

Orange County: ok tightened up, spending less.
San Fran: Tax Tax Tax! SPENNNNNDDD
LA: We have adopted a road warrior/social Darwinism approach to city matters.
