We will not pay $800,000 so that we can download a patch that might, maybe, possibly, fix your buggy product. I mean seriously IBM, have you no self respect? I would be pretty freaking embarrassed if I delivered a piece of software that locked up the server it's installed on, every two weeks, like clockwork. I sure as hell wouldn't then tell them they need to pay nearly a million dollars so that they can download a patch to "see of it fixes it".

Seriously? You want us to pay $800,000 for your God-awful customer service? I think not IBM.

Set up a cron job to reload the server every 13th day.

That'll be $5.

Are we consulting in this thread?

I recommend you implement the shuyung process.

That'll be $10,000.

Let me guess - you have a rack of servers that aren't on maintenance anymore and you want them to run with something current?

Hehe, this is somewhat similar to the solution I recommended. Only I didn't have to kick the whole server, just the services in question. I started coming up with contingencies as soon as I realized it was an issue with IBM's software, as I was aware of how absolute crap their customer service is. Be aware, if it is an IBM product that starts with a T, run away!

Remember IBM didn't want to have something called a "mouse" because making hundreds of millions of dollars is "embaressing".

Sadly, being out of maintenance means nothing on this.

At the company I am with:

We have a switch that is still under service contract. We do not run at the newest and latest software, we run a few versions behind. Supposedly on stable releases of the software. We had a software upgrade that we ran on our lab equipment for a few weeks with no issues.

When we deployed the software to our live servers, we started having massive redundancy fail overs. We get our vendor back on the phone and they seem stunned. BUT.... the exact same bug is present on a newer version of the software and they are working on a patch for it already.

"So let me get this straight: Your QA group apparently not only missed this bug on the newest software, but on the last several versions as well?"

"Well we did not know the bug would affect this version of the software, the patch may fix your equipment."

"So in order to fix the bugs you implemented last time we upgraded... you required us to upgrade to this version, which has stability issues."

"Yeah, sorry good luck on getting this working!"

"Really? We pay you for service and you wish us good luck getting your bugged product to work?"

Yeah, I just want to tell them off, but I've got to be professional. It just pisses me off that they don't seem to care how crappy their products are. As bad as Microsoft can be, I'm glad they won out over IBM with their OS. I can't imagine dealing with an IBM OS on everyone's home computers. Likely everyone would have switched to Linux or a Mac OS by now I guess.

I worked for IBM before the layoffs. You should see what goes on inside. <shiver>

So I was wrong about the $800k, found out today that it is actually $2.5 million. On the plus side, my review is coming up, so I can put in it that I saved the company $2.5 million dollars. I think I should get 10% as a bonus, right? Heck, I might even be talked into 1%...
