So, as proof of concept, I just wrote an addon that lets me datamine the name behind the account of any player. It doesn't even require a chatty addon. The information is just there by being in game.

It's time to vote with our wallets.

Can it mine the info if you have Realid disabled through parental controls?

Wow, really? Isn't that a bit discriminatory? It's none of his/her business what I choose to do at home in my spare time. I'd sure as hell be talking to a lawyer if I found out my app was refused because I chose to play an MMO.

I don't really blame them, when you get 200 applications for 1 position in this economy you need to somehow reduce the number, you don't have time to read 200 resumes. That means using arbitrary criteria and "MMO player" is a pretty good one, all things considered, they're not likely to have a great sleep schedule and it's well known that MMO addiction can interfere with work.

There's a BIG difference in being an "MMO player" and being addicted to an MMO. I can't remember the last time I logged in to WoW. I'm certainly not addicted, yet I still consider myself an MMO player. Not getting a job because someone hears me talking about WoW, and assumes that I'm hopelessly addicted, and won't show up to work on time is pretty stupid. Likewise, I wouldn't want to walk around on eggshells at work, or try and keep the fact that I play an MMO a secret from my boss, so he doesn't fire me. That's pretty lame, also. I'd also venture to say that, especially in a game like WoW, there are A LOT more casual players than there are true "addicts."

They don't know if you're an addict or not. If they have another 199 applications they can look at, why take the risk? This is why you need a college degree to work at a call center now. The degree isn't actually relevant to the job, it just makes it more likely you're not worthless and thus is a good arbitrary factor they can use to cut down on the number of resumes they have to read. I doubt anyone would actually FIRE you if they finds out after you start working, at that point you've already been able to show you're a good employee and he'd have to do the hiring and training process again were he to fire you. It's your application that will get discarded.

Welp...that's that. Not that I was actively playing right now anyway, but I've canceled my account regardless. Since player and character data basically hangs around forever in Blizzard's databases, and in light of 0-day RealID privacy exploits, I don't have any confidence that simply canceling a WoW subscription will actually protect against privacy intrusions. However, I suppose there's little else I can do about it at this point.

What the ****?

I have RealID disabled via parental controls and in game on my primary account. I can use my second account to mine the info on my primary account.

Are your accounts tied together on the same b.net account?

With as many people that play Blizzard games, I have to imagine there is at least more than one John Smith or the like. Have they said anything about how they will be handling identical names with this new feature?

This is Hitler’s response to the recent Blizzard changes.

So apparently even though I am not a current subscriber, my Real-ID info and battle.net account info will be accessible to anyone who cares to write an add-on to parse this?

All of this without my consent?

This is seriously a law suit waiting to happen.

Midgen:

That's pretty much the case. Currently, I can retrieve the Battle.net ID (the Email you use to login) and your real name by targeting a currently logged in character and asking for the information, without notifying them, vis-a-vis the default add-on modules Blizzard installs. This works for people who have disabled RealID via parental controls (such as myself). There exists within Blizzard's Lua framework the ability to do so for inactive characters as long as the character exists.

More to the point, these are Day-0 privacy exploits as Stathol mentioned. And for individuals who are literally the only person with that name in the country (such as myself), this is a devastating compromise of security and privacy. Consequently, I am seriously considering deleting all of my characters.

And Blizz gives those that object the middle finger:

We have been planning this change for a very long time. During this time, we have thought ahead about the scope and impact of this change and predicted that many people would no longer wish to post in the forums after this change goes live. We are fine with that, because we want to change these forums dramatically in a positive and more constructive direction.

It's been very obvious over the last few years that the forums are an exceptionally valuable source of information both for players and for us to gather feedback. There are many threads on this forum now, and over the last few years, that people have been constructively discussing many aspects of the game. They've received new wisdom and have then been able to go back to the game and enjoy it further with the new knowledge acquired through the forums.

These threads, however, can often be lost amongst a great deal of other threads that are basically filled with trolling, name calling, flaming, off-topic conversations and that's just a small amount of some of the content that has been found in these forums over the years. We don't want that anymore, and we believe the Real ID change will bring about a lot of the improvement that we are hoping for.

There's a lot of scare-mongering going on about the change, but there seems a need to make something very clear. The forums have always been an optional extra -- something you can choose to participate in if you wish to. With our Real ID changes for the forums, this is still the case. The only difference will be, if you do choose to participate in the forums, then you will do so by using your real name. But only after you've been warned and accepted this in advance...

...Posting on the forums with your real name will be optional -- yes, in the sense that the options are simply post and show your real name, or do not post and you keep it confidential. If people are happy to post and do not feel intimidated by this, then great -- hopefully they will also post constructively (though it's fair to say, this isn't a given). It might be scary to consider posting with your real name, in which case it might be advisable simply not to post in these forums. There's a whole load of other forums across the internet where you'll be able to post in a more anonymous way, and maybe you will make a useful and constructive contribution there instead.

Real Name or GTFO.

And that doesn't change the fact that the data-mining damage has already been done. As I warned earlier in the thread, the software is still running and the database links are still active. Simply by virtue of having an account, your real name and your battle.net ID (the e-mail address you use to log in) can be found ...

I know. And I'm not particularly happy about that.

It is an entertaining spectacle though:

So, a few years back, my wife did a 10-day trial of WoW. Does this mean her info is up for grabs? Or do they purge lowbie toons now and again? This trial account was from about 2005-ish I would guess.

Still can't find any proof-of-concept code for this yet :(

And no, the BNIsSelf thing doesn't count.

It does count. In the case of a Chatty Addon like Cartographer or Recount or GearScore ...

You have it run the command without output to one of the non-displayed output regions and record the returns.

Wow, the "official" European forum thread is up to 316 pages, the "official" US thread is up to 1213 pages.

By official, I mean the thread that blizzard is attempting to bury and locking every other thread remotely related to realID.

Good lord I hope someone at blizz has enough sense to kill this thing ASAP.

Here's the US thread - http://forums.worldofwarcraft.com/thread.html?topicId=25712374700&sid=1&pageNo=1

Every time I hit refresh, there is an entirely new page of posts.

Good stuff!

I would like to think this is being pushed on Blizz by Activision.

Who signed a contract to integrate B.net with Facebook.

From the blue comments that I've seen, its a done deal. RealID or GTFO.
