I was disappointed to hear that, the droid X was on my short list of phones to replace my HTC HD2 (love the phone but t-mobile's 3G is so bad they may as well not have it :/), not being able to root the phone takes out out of the running so now it's between the HTC EVO and Samsung epic, just trying to decide if physical keyboard is worth losing the 4.3" screen an the much better HTC sense interface.

Why? Why would you want to root the phone?

Some people have the uncorruptable belief that stock is never good enough, that "the man" can never make technology as good as "the people." This is the theology that created linux: the OS you have to compile. These are the people who put that software on their X-box 360s, and complained they had to have mod chips to do it.

Why for do you hate HTC?

Because the HTC Touch that I owned was the buggiest, most unresponsive, worst POS phone I've ever owned. Maybe it was because I owned it on the heels of my far-superior first iPhone, maybe the phone just was that poorly-designed and horrifically useless, I don't know. But I know that while I'm generally forgiving, that phone was so bad that it completely tainted my opinion of the HTC brand, and so bad that I'll never own another one.

Fair enough, thank you for the input.

Farsky, the Touch was, if I'm remembering my models right, pre-iPhone. The iPhone really was a game-changer when it came to stylus-less touch use. It gave everybody a kick in the *** on that, and laid down an expectation that having to use a stylus just wasn't good enough anymore.

So, in short, going from iPhone to pre-iPhone would definitely be a shock. I'll have to show you my new post-iPhone HTC, we'll see if we can't get you to forgive (contextually, of course!) and move on.

I want to sig this, but I can't choose which part really distills the essence. It's all so brilliant and cohesive.

Neither the touch or the touch pro 2 were shining examples of HTC's work.

They have made many very nice, very reliable handsets in the last few years though...

Or, to actually be fair and avoid strawmanning, that the man cannot and never will make perfect technology for all situations that is superior to all alternative technologies in all ways, and that having choice about what software to use at what time gives you the best chance at optimal operation.

Not as snappy, but you know. Possibly truthier.

Ah, I must've been thinking iPhone 3G.

Still, that puts the significant parts of the development cycle for the Touch before the iPhone was released. Specs and components and whatnot would all have been determined by January for a June launch, right?

Regardless of their release date, the Touch was still older design/technology, running an antiquated OS compared to what Apple was doing at the time.

Why? Why would you want to root the phone?

Because it allows for a much greater level of customization of the phone so I can make it my phone, not what Motorola tells me my phone should be and of course allows customs roms which are almost universally faster than stock roms and remove carrier bloatware as well as allowing you to get the latest OS version on your phone instead of waiting months or even longer for the phone manufacturer and then carrier to release it.

Now it's different on windows mobile (not the horrible new windows phone) in that no rooting is required as the phone is just completely open which is great thing, on my HTC HD2 I have a custom rom which runs much better than t-mobiles horrible stock rom and even worse stock rom update and in addition the custom rom has the more finger friendly 6.5.3 OS which even though the HD2 was released after it came out it only has 6.5 and the t-mobile updated rom didn't change this and 6.5.3 is so much better than 6.5.

In addition to that having things unlocked allowed me to reskin a lot of things on the phone so now for example my keyboard is purple and I also reskinned a windows mobile theme to be purple so the phone suits what I want my phone to look like much better.

Here is an example of stock vs custom, stock rom is on the left, custom rom which I reskinned on the right, I like the stock, but my reskinned one suits me much better.

Are those stock screenshots or did you take them? If you took them, what did you use to take them?

The pics on the left are stock pics I found online, the right side pics however are screenshots of my phone as it is right now I took using an app called shake and save that came on the custom rom I flashed, you can however get the app separately Here

old/current windows mobile 6.5.3 = open high customizable highly capable OS despite people thinking it isn't, I think those people's last experience with windows mobile is 5.0 or 6.0 which are quite different on a user experience, especially coupled with a custom UI like HTC's sense interface, as far as raw OS capability the iPhone is only just now finally caught up with what windows mobiles has been capable for for years.

new windows phone 7 = highly locked down OS with capabilities closer to the older iPhone OS, no copy & paste, no third party app multitasking and no ability for manufacturers to reskin the phones OS like HTC sense or Motorola's motoblur for android, no flash, sliverlight or html5 on the default browsers which you can't change (I have flash, silverlight and html5 on my windows mobile 6.5.3 phone though).

Really Windows phone 7 is not much more than older iPhone but without the fanboys that will buy anything with an apple logo slapped on it. And it's interface is ugly IMO and has quite a bit of wasted screen real estate unused on the right side of the screen. Dumbed down smartphones suck.

I just love how quick you are to label and judge a product that hasn't even been released yet.

I'm actually very likely to sell my iPhone 4 in favor of a new W7P device when they're released.

Nothing to do with the hardware or quality of the package, but I'm just irritated that Apple has become complacent with their UI. I want something new, interface-wise.

Also, the new Win7 phones just look like a better fit for me. I play Xbox Live a lot, and I have a Zune Pass subscription that's rendered useless with my current phone. Having Office will also be nice for work-related things.
