Anyone using this stuff?

I know DS has (had?) been using it for some things.

I'm considering using it as a sweetner when needed, in place of sucralose (Splenda). My Doctor suggested sucralose over other other alternatives (asparthame and their ilk).

Doing a little reading, it seems there is some controversy. The FDA had banned it in 1991, but now is legal to import and sell as a food supplement, but it's not allowed to be used as an 'additive'.

I'm not savvy with technical medical terms, but apparently some studies done years ago determined that the stuff had a mutagenic affect on liver cells in lab rats.

I also saw some references to potentially causing reproductive issues in lab rats...

It's still banned in the EU, Honk Kong and a few other places.

It's a difficult challenge finding a suitable sweetner that has negligible glycemic load and doesn't have other signigicant side effects or potential health concerns.

The reason I got interested is, I was looking up healthy protein recipes to support my fitness endeavors, and I found that there is a significant trend towards using stevia instead of sucralose and other alternatives. Some of the protein supplements are even being produced using Stevia in liu of sucralose, etc....

Anyway, I was just wondering if anyone else had looked into this, or had an opinion about it.

I intend to ask my Doctor about it next time I see him, but that might not be for a few months....

I am still using Stevia in the Raw. If you get the packets, it is pretty good. If you buy it in bulk it contains the same filler crap that makes Splenda suck (maltodextrin). I am however, tryign to ween completely off of sweeteners.

ALSO: the Stevia in the Raw packets come in a box of 50 for like $3.00; I can use only one per cup of coffee and it tastes fine. So I can get by a full month on $3.00 worth of sweetener.

I bought a liquid at my local "Super Supplements" store. I added a 4-5 drops to my protein shake this evening, along with some pureed blueberrys. It was actually too sweet. Kinda syrupy taste. Next time I'll try 1-3 drops.

I'll definitely look into the packets though. They sound much more economical. I think I paid $15 for the bottle I bought. It should last a while though.

We have some growing in our garden at the office. I chew up a piece occasionally, not quite sure how to use it in its bona fide raw form.

the liquid stuff has a different taste than the packets. It has more of a "planty" taste to it.

And I love that it is essentially using a flower (it is part of the sunflower family) to make things sweet.

SteviaClear is the stuff I got.

I'll keep an eye out for the "In the Raw" packets. Amazon has them, but only in a box of 600... I'd like try it before I make that kind of investment.

The United States and other countries continue to conduct more research on the herb. Some advocates of stevia as a sweetener feel that it is safe. There is hope that stevia may one day be able to be used to control blood pressure as well as help prevent obesity.
