I just got a brand new PS3 Slim (120GB) for $140. (Don't ask.) I figured, for the Blu-ray player alone it's worth that (So i'll need a $30 remote...but that can wait until we get a new TV). No games for it though...and no idea if there's any I even want to play. Any suggestions?

The only game I ever played on mine was Ratchet and Clank. It was good fun.

My PS3 has since gone the way of my Wii.. (I don't know where it is).

Ratchet and Clank is bad ***. There's a new one being released on Oct. 21 as well.

Other cool games:
Resistance: Fall of Man (same studio that does the R&C games)
Uncharted: Drake's Fortune

In November the Dragon Age game is coming out on PC/360/PS3. I'll be playing it on a console, since I don't have the money to build the new computer I crave right now.

That really depends on what kind of games you like.

If you like shooters, then you are set -- there are tons of those (Killzone 2, Call of Duty 4, Resistance series being standouts)

If you like quirky games, there are those too, like Little Big Planet, Fat Princess (online only), EchoChrome (puzzle game), and Every Day Shooter (Geometry Wars on acid)

There are existential games like Flower and Flow (PSN download).

Sports, Racing, Action/Adventure (Metal Gear Solid 4, upcoming God of War 3, already out Uncharted Drake's Forture, and its already monster upcoming sequel Uncharted 2: Among Thieves), Music/Rhythm, Platformers (like the already mentioned Ratchet and Clank series), etc etc.

The only genre the PS3 seems to really lack atm is RPG, but there are more on the horizon (Dragon Age, Last Guardian, Final Fantasy 13, and 13 Versus -- Folklore and White Knight Chronicles are already out)

My current library is: Killzone 2, Metal Gear 4, Resistance 1 and 2, and Sonic's Ultimate Genesis Collection. Plus several PSN downloaded games.

EDIT: Almost forgot the upcoming Afrika, which is a Pokemon Snap/safari/photography game. Looks really good IMO.

Out of curiosity, why are you averse to using the controller as the remote?

There's a few tactical RPGs on there too, if that's what you're interested in - Disgaea 3, Valkyria Chronicles.

Good insight on why it wouldn't be good on a console or in general.

I think it looks good and I will probably buy. If I do, I'll be getting it on 360 because that unlocks a special armor in Mass Effect 2, which is a must-buy.

Aside from it being classic Bioware, the console version won't have the world building tools meaning no custom content. I already made this mistake with Fallout 3, though...I didn't have the chance to have an upgraded computer when Fallout 3 came out. I will have a computer that will run Dragon Age, however.

Folklore.

Also, DON'T update to the 3.0 firmware. Widespread reports of it bricking the disc drive.

Because it sucks?

That said, any remote solution for the PS3 sucks, as Harmony isn't among them.

I actually enjoyed Fallout 3 on a 52" 1080p LCD TV, much more than I would have on a 22" monitor. Not having the ability to create content or use some of the tools that are out there is not a dealbreaker for me. Custom content isn't a deal maker for me, 'cause I just don't have the time or energy to make my own, or the patience to wade through pools of feces to find a gem... did that with NWN, and that was enough.

The hotfix update after 3.0 supposedly fixes any issues that have cropped up. Other than some PSN connectivity issues, tho, I personally have not had any problems.

I am so glad they increased the damn font size, tho. I sit about 8 feet from my TV and I had to squint sometimes to even see what I was reading.

There's a class-action lawsuit filed against Sony over the 3.0 failures.

Quote:
Sony is now facing a class action lawsuit based on the allegation that a recent patch to the Playstation 3 has created hardware failures.

We reported last week that a not insignificant number of PS3 systems have experienced optical drive failure after installation of a recent patch. Today it was reported that a PS3 owner named John Kennedy has filed a class action suit against Sony for the failures. Among the accusations are complaints for breach of warranty, negligence, and negligent misrepresentation.

The 3.0 firmware update for the PS3 was a mandatory upgrade, and is viewed as responsible for causing systems to freeze while playing games, and even stopping the system from recognizing the optical drive. Sony confirmed that the 3.0 firmware affected systems on its blog shortly after the update, though no specifics were given, stating “SCEA is aware of reports that PS3 owners are experiencing isolated issues with their PS3 system since installing the most recent system software update.”

A further firmware update is alleged to have caused even more problems. What prompted the suit though was Sony’s statement that the plaintiff in this case would need to pay $150 to have his system fixed.

Sony has not yet released an official statement regarding the suit.

Oh, and NHL 10. *Wink* You know you want to play with the all time greats of the Habs! (could do it in 09 too, but 10 is a better game)

I generally don't like action games (which rules out most stuff on the PS3.) I have no patience for figuring out that type of nonsense, i generally just get out the cheat codes so I can breeze past it.

Demon's Souls is a game that is marketed solely on being hard. This is great for people that want a terribly hard game. It's not for everyone, though. In fact I'd wager it's not for most people. It also has forced pseudomultiplayer interaction which would drive off a lot of people, I believe. Details are complicated and can be found in most any review if anyone's interested in finding out more.

I'm one of those people who would love to play it (no PS3 however) but I can't recommend it in good conscience without that big disclaimer. :p

Didn't see Infamous mentioned; that's probably my favorite release of 2009 so far (Though I'm sure Uncharted 2 will take that crown Tuesday...the first Uncharted is still my favorite, and by far my most replayed game this gen.)

Wow, the reviews on Uncharted 2 are ASTOUNDING.

http://www.metacritic.com/games/platforms/ps3/uncharted2amongthieves

Kind of glad I don't have a PS3, with that and ratchet and clank this month I would be flat busted. I already have too many games to buy on the 360!

Adam Sessler from G4TV said in his review that Uncharted 2 had the best single player experience ever.

I'm so stoked for that game.
