Yes. They may not be the 4 he listed, they vary from guy to guy, but I'd stick with the Yes.

Thanks.

I don't know of anyone who thinks these chivalric actions are being provided on necessity, saying that women can't do them themselves, or are even expected. Chivalry comes by performing small actions due to a willingness and desire for showing someone that you respect them, be it a stranger or a loved one.

Some people just can't have nice things done for them, and some people are too selfish to provide them or see any worth in them. *shrug*

Like many other things, chivalry has been forgotten, misunderstood and bastardized, but it is not dead, and it is not dorky. Duty to your countrymen, God and women continues to be observed by some, and rightly so.

If your chivalry is not based in humility (i.e., you open doors in order to establish your strength, or you demand to pump gas, yadda yadda) then you don't really grasp the concept.

Anyway, in your opinion, is it a good quality, or dorky?

I fully endorse opening doors, letting a woman proceed me through a doorway with a slight flourish of my hand, seating her at the table, putting myself between traffic and her, etc. You can't be chivalrous enough, and every woman I have met eats that stuff up.

Do it with style and everyone in the room is impressed. If you can't do it with style, don't do it. And if the focus of your attention thinks for one second that you're doing it for anyone but her, you're not doing it with style. At that moment, it's all about her, 100%.

They don't. It has been scientifically proven that they don't. And I know all about child birth, but over the course of pregnancy, a woman's body is basically preparing its self for the pain of birth. So, outside of that, men scientifically have a higher pain tolerance than women do because we are men. And we eat nails and stuff.

Once when I was being chewed out for holding the door for someone (not my date, I wasn't on one) I made the comment that she was right, I shouldn't have done it, and let the door go, which promptly hit her in the face.

I almost felt bad about that.

Don't ever feel bad about that again, Micheal! She deserved what she got!

I hold the doors open for people all of the time...male, female, old, young...doesn't matter, it's just common courtesy and how I was raised. I always get a thank you, too...and when someone holds the door open for me, they get a thank you!!

Please and Thank you are the most used phrases in my vocabulary! It's important to me to show people the respect they deserve, even if they actually don't deserve it, because I believe in the Pay it Forward concept! Do good unto others and they will do good unto others and so on and so on! Besides, Karma is a ***** and will bite me in the arse if I don't behave! :P

In my experience in nursing...I have taken care of WAY more whiny men than women..men can tolerate pain way less than women...leastwise old men...maybe their pain tolerance gets less as they age..

What is pain tolerance? Is it the ability to STFU and deal with it or does it mean you feel less pain?

I've found that a stoic acceptance of pain in the hospital results in being bypassed by the pain meds cart. Also, if all I have to do is whimper and a sweet nightingale will come administer to my ouchie, then whimper I shall.

Do you ever get the ones wrapped in barbwire? Those are my favorite.

Raltar, you're confusing pain threshold with pain tolerance.

Here's the deal, highly generalized :
Men have a higher pain threshold, so they feel less pain than women.
Women have a higher level of pain tolerance, so they endure pain better than men.

Except they don't.

Jeffrey Mogil, Ph.D., is professor of pain studies at McGill University in Montreal, Canada. He explains that while not all studies have found sex differences, those which have all point in the same direction that contradicts conventional wisdom. "Females are more sensitive to pain, less tolerant and more able to discriminate different levels of pain than males," he says. This is true in studies of both humans and animals.

As for the pregnancy thing, women cheat ;)

Quote:
Pregnancy actually is the exception to the rule. While pregnant, women do become progressively less sensitive to pain as they get closer to giving birth. Natural painkillers like endorphins are elevated during pregnancy and labor, helping fight pain.

Not so much.

"The laboratory studies show rather convincingly that women have a lower pain threshold and pain tolerance than men. That has been fairly consistently shown in the experimental studies that have been done."

edit: As for men being babies about pain, I think it's due to selective memory on the observer's part. Who are you going to remember more, a big strapping man complaining about his boo-boo, or a sensitive little lady? On the other hand, I know I'm a complete wuss when I'm sick. I only get sick about once a year, while my wife seems to catch something about half a dozen times. When I am sick though, I want my mommy. ;)

Having watched a woman wither away and die in great pain that I could do nothing about, and knowing I would have slit my wrists long before she got to the point of immobility, I know my wife tolerated and withstood pain far better than I do. She almost never mentioned her pain,

Is this a gender related trait? i don't know.

I have no doubt that your experience was meaningful and your wife was stalwart. My condolences, as it is obvious that you still bear the pain of her loss.

Just watched the Chapelle video, twice, and ... I don't think he really presented his case.

DC : Chivalry is dead, and women killed it.
DC : Women are getting advice about men from other women.
DC : Men only need 4 things to be happy.
DC : A woman dressed like a whore might not be a whore, but she sure looks like one.

Um, ok. You said some funny things in there, and the audience seemed to appreciate your sense of humor, but you didn't really address your claim that women killed chivalry. Unless by "killed chivalry" you mean they "decided it's not OK to say 'damn, lookit them titties'".
