Interesting note: they just announced Star Wars Blu-rays to be released in 2011. I made mention of it on my social networking feeds, posting "STAR WARS Blu-rays announced. Lucas sez 'To maintain continuity, all current CGI characters will be replaced with their CLONE WARS models.'" I made up the last part, of course, as I was just snarkily commenting on Lucas's predisposition to fiddle with the films, and tried to come up with the most idiotic, outrageous change possible to let people know it was a joke.

I was immediately inundated with cries of dispair and anger. Which was even funnier, as it showed me that at this point, no bad idea Lucas could have regarding changes to the original trilogy seems out of the realm of possibility at this point. :D

It really makes me wonder why the **** that scene wasn't included in the original cut. It was super bad ***.

My guess is that the coolness factor of that scene is borne of the fact that the Universe is now so well known. Initially, it must have been dropped for stupid "need to cut this beast down some" reasons. We didn't *need* to see Luke make his lightsaber, no matter how cool it was. At least, I imagine, that was the thinking at the time.

It is a very, very cool scene, though.

I watched the whole interview from that convention, and Jon Stewart was there interviewing Lucas. It was pretty fun. Stewart was his usual funny self, and a fan boi all at once. And I think Seth Green must have been in the audience. Stewart got a very cool gift - a storm trooper with his face, and an extra head that had him sporting his short lived beard.

Okay, Darkroland, that was utterly awesome.

I never understood the whole angst of whether or not Han shot first. I disagree with Lucas's characterization of the original scene, but it's not that big of a deal.

Yup. I've never really gotten the whole "up in arms over the SE" thing. For me it's always been about making Greedo look less incompetent (even though he misses, he at least has the presence of mind to shoot!), which thereby increases the elevation of Han's credentials. Whether or not people interpret it that way (because Greedo missed), is an entirely separate matter, so I think it's better to take issue with the effectiveness of the change, rather than the motivation in making it.

To me, it was a great way of showing Han to be a true, hardened scoundrel. That way, when we learn he's got half a heart, it's a meaningful development.

This is how I feel about it too. It shows growth in the character.

Meh. He's supposed to be a self-centered, materialistic, what's-in-it-for-me? guy. Shooting first sets him up as a murderous guy, which I don't think was ever the intention.

Shooting first goes hand in hand with "what's in it for me guy".

Duuuuude...I almost believe it. You're totally right, Lucas WOULD do that if he could.

I'm not so sure, though. The best defense is a good offense! Maybe he's so good at his craft he instinctively knew he was going to be shot, so the only way to prevent it was to shoot first. Han shot first. Han is a good guy. Truck that shady Greedo mothertrucka.

I'm not someone who cares whether or not Han shot first, I just play someone who does on the Internet.

Ok I found it. Very cool. I assume this it. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=18O-Rj2MP9Q

I've known about the "building the lightsaber scene" for a while. I didn't know it was actually shot, but I do know they had built a working lightsaber prop with "innards" for that scene specifically.

Because it wasn't. View Hamill's comments.
