Ok, so why is it that I can't embed YouTube with [youtube] tags? What do I need to do to embed video?

I think that's broken. Try the yt tag with the full URL.

The youtube tag is deprecated has been replaced with the yt tag. Mouseover the yt button and you will see the formatting information. The youtube tag still exists, so if you really want to use it you can, but the button is gone in order to discourage its use.

See, that's the only thing I don't quite understand. Why would we want to discourage the use of a perfectly good feature? Personally, I can count on one hand the times I've used a button to apply tags; as long as the functionality is still present, I'm happy. I'm just not sure why one should be discouraged in favor of the other. The concept is confusing to me as neither has clear and unanimously supported advantages.

Having both tags creates confusion. People will try to use the yt syntax with the youtube tag or vice versa. People were often using the youtube tag with the full url anyways, so it was decided to support that functionality. The yt tag is more versatile and is the preferred method. If I could've made the youtube tag support both the tag id and the full url, I'd have done so. I couldn't, so I made the best choice I could.

I still use the youtube tag. Typing yt just seems lazy.

that clears it up..thanks, I was wondering why the "yt" tag wasn't working with the old "youtube" tag formatting
