I must have completely missed the cheesy '80s action movie appreciation gene. Those films hold no interest for me. *shrug*

Most of them are just terrible movies. They are definitely testosterone fests, though. Which, if that's your thing, more power to you. I like heist movies, and spy movies. I also like good, clean action. So movies like the Bourne Identity really draw me in (though, the action director for the second film was fail, and the third film was better but not great). Give me nice, tight, logical continuous action shots. I want to see the story of a fight play out, and if the movie is supposed to be realistic, I don't want to groan when someone hucks a bigass knife through someone's skull at 50 yards before the poor bastard even fires his AK-47.

Movies like Rambo, Red Dawn, Commando, and even Predator were just meh. Navy seals? Heh. Top Gun? not so much. Iron Eagle? bleh. Pilot movies were better than the Rambo genre, but not by a whole lot. I loved them when I was a kid, but got over it.

Mindless mayhem can be fun.

I like my mindless mayhem to involve Zombies, I think.

And the shakeycam.

Oh god the shakeycam...

The shakeycam was only added in the sequels. The first one didn't really have one.

Yeah, the shakey cam in the second movie pissed me right off. The first one's action direction was much, much better.

I concur with both statements above.

I could normally state that Shakeycam never bothers me, but The Bourne...whatever, the second one is the exception to that statement. I never saw the third because the director of the second returned to helm it.

You should see the third, I think it was the best of the three.

The shakey cam in the 3rd wasn't as bad as in the second one. The second movie actually got me to the point of actually starting to get motion sick.

I disagree with Jhorra that it's the best of the 3, but it's a pretty good wrap up of the series and worth a watch.

I don't notice shakeycam really if I'm watching a movie I'm getting into, but if the movie isn't my favorite or whatever, it's a really annoying effect.

Just got back. Was the greatest movie I've ever seen. It had explosions, it had people getting shot, it had explosions, it had people getting their limbs cut off, it had explosions, some guy got his head cut off, it had explosions, people's necks were snapped. **** awesome. It was everything I had hoped for and more. There was not one ounce of disappointment the entire film except for the 2 minutes during the opening credits were going and the lights came on and the movie shut off.

This is the most compelling movie review I've ever seen.

The Expendables was the most fun I've had at a movie theater in years...

When it comes out on Bluray I'm buying a case of beer and having a Commando/Expendables Day of Awesome...

LTTP Necropost:

Loved it, but for the General.
The writers either needed to make his change of heart have an actual impact on the way the story played out, or make him an out-and-out villain right up to the end. As it was, all he did was spout pseudo-tough-guy one-liners that made me want to believe he was gonna turn into some kind of hero to his people, then fail to follow through. During the climactic guns-n-bombs scene, all I could think of was that the heroes were killing all the wrong people and blowing up a perfectly good villa that didn't need to be destroyed.

Other than that - pretty decent action flick.
