With Stargate Universe's first season being so wonderful last year, I decided I'd suck it up and go back and try to watch the SG1 and Atlantis series that I'd never gotten into.

Overall, these series were great, from beginning to end. There were some slow episodes, but the setting and continuing story arcs were a lot of fun.

If you need a sci-fi fix, and missed these the first time around, I highly recommend them. (In case you only ever watched the 1994 movie with James Spader and Kurt Russel, the show "SG1" picks up where the movie left off, and it's the same characters in SG1, just different actors playing them. Honestly, Michael Shanks and Richard Dean Anderson were much better.) Farscape fans will enjoy Ben Browder and Claudia Black showing up late in the series, too.

I'm looking forward to MGM's revival so they can start making Stargate DVD movies again.

I could never get into the Stargate series. I liked the first movie well enough, but the actors on the show were just...bland, I guess. I don't like them. Especially that blond woman. She just irritates me and I have no idea why.

Wait, wait...

I'm stuck on you saying Stargate: Universe was wonderful.

Am I not detecting the proper sarcasm here?

I watched it, and then didn't want to watch SG: Atlantis or SG1 because I was afraid they were just as bad.

On the rest of your point, I highly recommend SG: Atlantis and SG1 as well. The characters are great, and the plotlines are as well.

I prefer SG: Atlantis to SG1, but that's just me. I love Shepard and Weir.

Raltar, if you didn't like SG1, try SG:Atlantis. Almost no crossover in main characters, at least at the beginning.

I kinda like Sam Carter (and Amanda Tapping is very cute), but Daniel Jackson (Michael Shanks) > *.

NephyrS: I loved SGU. Critics have liked it too. But it's VERY different from SG1 and SG:A, much darker, more serious, more cerebral. I can understand someone who watched the other series first not liking its direction.

I love SG1. I have all 10 seasons on DVD. Best god damned present I have ever received.

I really like Daniel Jackson in the show better than in the movie. And MacGuyver as O'Neil... that was awesome.

No, I watched SG:U first.... I just thought the characters have been completely flat the whole season.

Except maybe Rush, who I think is doing a great job acting- the rest are all flat and rigidly typed, imo. Every episode was completely predictable.

I was pleasantly surprised when I went back and watched SG: Atlantis and found the whole franchise wasn't built on an absence of unique characters.

::edit:: Oh, and I like Amanda Tapping much better in Sanctuary, with the British accent.... mmmm.....

I never got into STARGATE SG-1. I tried...I even watched it when it originally premiered (back on Showtime, remember that?), but it just didn't grab me. It probably didn't help that I thought the movie on which it was based was fairly crummy.

I got behind on Universe and didn't finish season one. It was decent and I was hoping it might take a season to find it's legs like atlantis did.

Begining to end atlantis is a great fairly concise and complete series.

Sg-1 is rather expansive by comparison and actually spans several Epochs of story development.

I don't know that we need another classic SG movie after continum. Arc of truth was the movie that wrapped up all the loose ends and continum was the great feel good encore. I felt stated after it was over. We could possibly do something with Atlantis. There are cetainly some rocks there to be kicked over yet.

My biggest problem with SG:U is that Colonel Young is retarded. Any time a situation comes up where he needs to make any kind of decision he invariably makes the wrong one...

Much <3 for SG:1 and Atlantis. I've only seen the first 2 episodes of Universe, but I like what I've seen so far. I need to get started on the rest of season 1.

My only problem with SG:1 was the very last episode of the series. I really didn't care for it, and it's a shame, because everything else was so frakkin' awesome. It just didn't feel like a proper send off. Ark of Truth mostly made up for that, but I still felt cheated by the final episode.

I just started Stargate SG1 on netflix watch now (you're totally right, craving a sci-fi fix). I'm enjoying it so far. Apparently the pilot was an unedited edition they shot, because I wasn't really expecting the full frontal female nudity in the first episode (not that I was upset, but just wanted to say something for people that have the childrens around).

In case you want your kids to be able to watch it, they redid the pilot as a dvd movie in 2009 (using film footage from the original pilot), with improved special effects (they had a fairly low budget in the first season), calling it "Children of the Gods", and having removed the full frontal shot. And that was the only time in the entire series they showed any nudity.

The pilot was unedited because it was on Showtime, not a network channel.

My wife and I have been working through sg-1, we are currently about midway through season 10. Due to a mixup, we had gotten season 10 out of order, started watching the first season of Atlantis, but we haven't watched any of sg:u yet...

I loved that. And really enjoyed SG1. I liked Atlantis too, but I think they resolved it too quick.

I loved SG-1, although the first season was a bit slow, in fact I didn't really get into it and quit watching it. I tried it again in season 3 and discovered it was much better. The actors developed a really good on screen chemistry with each other, better than I've seen in most other shows.

Atlantis suffered from the same slow start but also got very good. It was simply doomed because it was too much like SG-1 and SciFi was wanting to get away from that for some unfathomable reason.

SG:U has had some good moments so I'm willing to keep watching it to see if it follows the same progression as the other two.

Bumping this thread because I just (last week) started a marathon of watching the Stargate Franchise from beginning to end (current).

I was craving some Sci Fi and jumped on to Netflix looking for a series to watch. I was thinking I'd start on BSG, but the original Stargate movie came up on my recommended list, and I looked and saw that all of the franchise series are available on Netflix Instant Watch, so I started with the first movie (Kurt Russell and James Spader), and then started on the SG1 series. I got through Season 3 and started Season 4 last night.

I can't believe I've never watched a single episode of this show ever, even on accident (I never channel surf). I could I miss this for 10 years?

It's not awesome, but the stories are pretty good, and have not gotten old/repetitive (yet?). The cast is pretty good together. I like all of the characters ok, but O'Neill's sarcasm and whineyness gets a little old sometimes. I do think however they made a good choice lightening that character up from the suicidal version that Kurt Russell played in the movie. That would have gotten old fast.

Some of the stories have truck sized holes you could drive through if you spend too much time analyzing them. Especially the time travel episodes.

Overall though I'm really liking it.

They are letting them finish off the season, though, so hopefully they still have some room left to give it some closure.

It's Stargate fans who killed SG:U. They were mad over the cancellation of Atlantis and never really gave it a shot.

I thought SG:U sucked. I also thought BG sucked. Too much drama.

SyFy is trying to distance itself from traditional Sci-Fi anyway. Stargate doesn't fit into its new model. WWE, however, does. /boggle

Sad. I thought Atlantis ended well. Universe has been okay at best. Hopefully well see some more direct to DVD movies Perhaps about the Lucian/Earth war if Universe doesn't seal that up.
