I used to enjoy tweaking the monk's that came around the old site and eventually they succumbed to the awesomeness that was rangers and became at the least interesting members of the community.

I seem to recall that Talya falls into that category...

Talya was the worst of them, but I thought she was a ranger first, then made a monk when they were slightly over powered, then complained about how they were brought back in line while screaming nerf to rangers, all the while using her experience doing RP of a gay ranger as justification.

Her first character's name was Deirdre I think, and was a monk. And I think Talya is the ranger. I can remember because my parents were always like "Deirdre this... yadda yadda yadda... Talya yadda yadda". Substitute actual words in for "yadda" of course. Or maybe I'm totally wrong.

It was complicated.

There, fixed.

Edit: And the original Glade site was far away a better, more Ranger friendly site (especially for those of us who were not 'uber' in any way) than the 'EQ Outrider' site ended up being. For my money, the management of EQ Outride were/are only interested in the high end game, and most of the members there seem to actively discourage newness...

Its a completely different period of time now, but you could track those same changes from the original email distribution lists that predated The Glade (eq-rangers and eqrangers) from which the initial core of The Glade was founded. By the end of the run for the The Glade, it was very much a technically oriented site with high end or experience based discussions. The most "newbie" friendly ranger site was one who's name I can no longer recall (and rarely visited), where there was almost non-existent raiding/high end discussion, and the few times it was brought up, from what I recall, the info was incorrect as the posters were going on what they heard.

EQ Outrider (disclosure - I am an admin there and one of the founders) exists in a period in which there is are next to no new players, and any discussions about how to play a ranger are from people with experience in the game starting a twink, or abandoning another class. Their questions all get answered, if asked, though with the repository of information there, most of it has probably already been answered and they find it by searching.

That said, EQHunter, of which I was also a founder, was extremely raid oriented with a focus on the top guilds at the time, and was originally invite only, and was a direct result of SunMoon's disdain for any discussions related to high end Everquest and the constant bickering about casual vs. raider that was inevitable in any topic about raiding.

EQOutrider was started by a mix of rangers from EQHunter and another ranger site that attempted to fill the void of The Glade. We do have few people that tend to be a bit blunt, or caustic, in their posting style rubs me the wrong way, but overall, I have seen most posters attempt to be genuinely helpful.

That, and we have an automatic substitution... the words 'stupid' or 'retarded' get replaced by Mippo.

Talya was not, to my knowledge, one of the monks calling for a Ranger nerf because they felt entitled for Rangers to suck so that they were more desireable and got better treatment in loot distribution in their guilds. Talya was just pissed about the nerf.

I remember one monk in particular coming around telling us we needed to decide what sort of nerf we'd accept and tell the deves we needed it because otherwise we were going to get one regardless and it might be worse. The "Rangers suck" thing from Kunark took on a life of its own and turned into a sense of entitlement for some players.

Talya was definitely one of the monks complaining that rangers were overpowered and needed to have adjustments to bring things back into line so that "pure" melee held their rightful place above hybrids.

Thinking back on this, I think it was EQHunter and not EQOutrider that I was thinking of with my earlier post...

PoN had a few warriors with a similar attitude. Some were eminently more reasonable - they actually wanted multiple viable tanking classes, shock and awe.

Yeah, there was a lot of that "but hybrids have more utility so we need to do more damage than they do!" going round, all the while knowing perfectly well that higher DPS + the utility of either stealth or FD pulling was vastly greater than that of hybrid spells. It was really about "we need to do more DPS so we're MORE desired than they are so we can get into the best guilds, get the raid slots and get the loot", and it wasn't just monks, rogues were bad about it too - worse, most of the time.

Regardless, the point was that it was a Ranger board and Sunmoon did nothing about that ****. It was nothing but trolling and flamebaiting.

I guess I never thought of the Glade as cliqueish. Paladins (Vlad), Shamans (Numbuk), Monks (Taly), Druids (Rivermist), etc. Were always welcome and valued members of the community.

I don't think the Glade was cliqueish, so much as there was this sudden monk invasion after the nerf. Rogues I remember being a problem everywhere else.. in both raid guilds I was in, it was ALWAYS rogues trying to come up with new loot rules, sometimes in the middle of a raid, to benefit them.

Of course, there was Arkus, the clique of one, who A) had idiotic ideas about how the game worked and B) lectured everyone else on what asses they were for not agreeing with him. I remember dreading his name appearing at the top of a post because it was going to be him berating someone on a subject he clearly knew nothing about.

I remember a few factions.

You had the ones that wanted to tank and were incensed that the plates could take damage better (and usually wanted to retain their superior damage output in the process of getting tanking buffs).

You had the ones that wanted to focus on melee damage and hated elemental bows and the like because they felt they set a bad example, and felt they needed some kind of backstab or something.

You had the ones that felt they should be focusing on archery and there should be more and bigger bows available easily. They tended to be the biggest proponents of Elemental bows, and seemed to want some kind of bow strike.

I could be misremembering. I just recall that being the way.

What about the happy to be a ranger faction? Flawed though we were people like Underbrush taught me to be a ranger and we put out major damage (not uber), could tank in a group (not great), could pull (not as good as a monk), etc.

I never once called for a nerf to any class (except maybe rogues, just to irritate safehouse brats.) That wasn't my style. I felt in general in EQ that most all classes needed buffs, not nerfs. Since a player character rarely had a real shot going toe-to-toe with an even levelled mob, I always kinda felt that the game made players look like wimps while NPCs seemed uber-powerful.

I played a monk first, a ranger second. They were the only two classes i ever levelled up at all. The monk nerf caused me to quit EQ (since it was caused by monks with far better gear than 99.9% of us, but only really hit the rest of us), not scream for ranger nerfs.

Prior to the nerf, I felt rangers were a bit weak compared to monks. They never recovered the ability to tank acceptably in a group that they had pre-kunark, and while if geared well (or focusing on that trueshot discipline) they could occasionally hope to keep up with a monk for damage, they never quite felt as versatile as my monk did, despite the spells. I could never solo with my ranger quite as easily as I did with my monk, and the consequences when things went wrong were far, far worse.

I recall there being some viewpoints regard bows vs melee vs ranged, but I don't know if there were cliques really, other than the less-known posters who were really only there to post on that one issue. It was the same way with DKP vs fist systems; most of the regular posters had their viewpoint, but you had a few people who only posted on loot system issues. I guess there might have been some cliques in that regard but the regular posters weren't like that to my recollection.

The main thing with the "should we be tanks or DPS and if so what kind" was that each viewpoint was advocating something that wasn't going to happen. There wasn't going to be a backstab, there wasn't going to be major changes to archery to make it as fully developed as melee, and there sure as hell wasn't going to be major changes to Rangers to make us tanks when they couldn't even make SKs and Paladins tank well enough for most raids.

In many respects the playerbase just had unrealistic expectations for what could be done in any reasonable amount of time without introducing a whole new host of issues and when incompatible unrealistic views met.. it was ugly. Franly, the loot disputes had it all over the class change ones just because loot systems were toally under playerbase control so it was much more worthy of discussion.

Adding 2 new classes to the mix certainly didn't help.

I don't think Berzerkers really screwed much up because by the time they arrived on the scene the game was past its peak.

Beastlords, on the other hand... holy ****. They were **** everywhere and they were unbelieveably easy to play; it was like the best combination of pet caster and melee you could hope for with an easy epic to boot. I was thrilled that they didn't make it into EQ2; if they appear in EQNext we can only hope they're more based in reality.

Colored posts -> color visibility in various themes -> discussion of various themes here -> Glade theme rocks -> Glade theme reminds me of Sunmoon so it sucks -> discussion of Sunmoon and the original Ranger's Glade -> monks on the original Ranger's Glade trolling the forum calling for ranger nerfs -> general discussion of Rangers and their place in the EQ world.
