America circa 1940, in color

Really hammers home how recent suburbia is (intellectually, I knew that the suburban push was post-war, yet it never really occurred to me that this was the America my grandparents grew up in), and how recently agriculture and the frontier still played major parts in our culture, regionally. And that's from a guy with major rural communities on three sides of his county!

I found other versions of those pictures in the OP that lead me to believe the color and contrast have been modified to enhance their impact.

Nice photos, but what I think were the original lack some of the punch seen in the link.
