This. Multiple times in a row for me. Along with the used games market argument and their horrible policy of forcing their people to force-sell strategy guides and their print mag, I started boycotting.

These days, I get things via Amazon and Steam, generally. Best Buy if I don't want to wait on shipping.

Exactly, Coren. Hence why I'm not overly concerned about GameStop's survival based on their secondary market.

I'm pretty sure Gamestop does this intentionally to encourage people to pre-order. It's stupid. I won't play that game with them any more. There are so many other choices that work...

And to be honest, there hasn't been a new game released in a long long time that I absolutely had to have the first day. I realize that SC2 was popular, but I still haven't picked up a copy (been pre-occupied). I guess it just isn't that big of a deal any more. I usually get my gaming recommendations from reading this board, so unless someone mentions it here, I probably don't know something is coming out soon anyway.

Rare exceptions are Assassins Creed 2, which I picked up within a week of launch, thinking I'd be excited to play it and get me to turn my 360 back on. Didn't work I never finished the tutorial. Now I hear that Force Unleashed 2 is coming out soon'ish? I loved the first one, perhaps too much :p... but I'm not going to rush out and get the next one on launch day. If I see it on a shelf I'll grab it and bring it home.. see if it compels me to fire up the console (unlikely)... :-/

GameStop has two stores in town. Their business practices have come such that I was able to get multiple StarCraft II Collector's Editions the Friday after launch. And ... that's pretty much as useful as they are to me.

Weren't you boycotting Blizzard? Then you got two collector's editions?! :D

I don't really recommend selling one's games to GS, just because of the horrible rate they give. It takes extra effort, but selling them on your own is way more profitable.

I don't get it...

I was hoping I could sell the WoW pet, but apparently it's connected to the account. Although, my CE came later her ein Japan, so I bought a copy at the BX, which is what I installed... This is all OT though!

I completely disagree with not owning the item you purchase, even if it is digital.

As others have stated, there is no "agreement" until after you've already purchased it. I agree that you aren't buying the rights to the code, but you are buying rights to the copy of the game. This copy should be in your ownership, to buy, sell, trade, or let collect dust. I don't see how the video game industry's product is so special that it's not actually yours, even after you buy it.

Real world example to display the absurdity of this:

A man goes to a car lot and picks out a new shiny sports car. It looks great. After looking at the ridiculously overpriced car, he decides he can't pass it up, despite the cost. The car is just so sexy.

So this man hops into the car with his new key, inserts it into the ignition, and then a screen pops down from the ceiling with a 55+ page EULA agreement. Mind you, he already paid the $40k+ for the vehicle, and it's now his. The EULA, in short, states that he only has the right to "use" the car. The car itself still belongs to BMW. He has no right to actually sell the car or trade, or do anything other than drive it himself. This man does not have rights to the parts, components, and design of the car. He only has rights to drive it.

How ridiculous is that? It's pretty much what's happening in the video game industry.

You might have a point, if the customer was buying the source code. If it was possible to rip the code off of a DVD and decompile it, then create your own game, you would have an argument for legitimate licensing usage. Unfortunately for us, you can't.

The buyer of the game is not paying $60 for a disc. They're paying $60 for specific code, compiled in a specific way, that they cannot edit or replicate. They are paying for the time and effort that went into the game, not what's actually on the disc. The original creator of the content is at no more of a risk of losing his creation than KFC is at risk of losing the secret recipe when you buy some extra crispy.

Banning the resale of games (and trying to justify it) is just as stupid as banning (and trying to justify) the resale of a movie.

This is a slippery slope and it worries me.

No, but I advocate the resale of something that isn't a false analogy post-consumption (not that you made the false analogy, just that it is one): painted/sculptured works of art.
