Interesting little game/test. You have to differentiate between pictures of armed and unarmed people as quickly as possible. Shoot the armed ones by pressing "/" and holster your weapon for the unarmed ones by pressing "z".

I've not been able to devote the time to this, but I've noticed that the background behind whatever is in the person's hand critical in determining what he's carrying. That's hardly a white/black thing.

Time difference in decision to shoot whites and blacks is virtually nil (a good think, I guess). Decision to holster is a tad bigger discrep. Thing that got me the most was trying to identify what was a jammy, and what wasn't.

Anyway, strange game Prof. Fulken. How about a nice game of chess?

It's got a lot of problems. For one thing, you only shoot with one hand. For another thing, you have a lot longer than one second to make a decision.

You also don't have to answer the phone in the middle of it.

1. There's a major clothing discrepancy between races.

2. There's a curious thing about how the Black participants hold innocuous objects and the White participants hold Firearms that's intended to bias your perceptions.

The test skews the results toward that disparity.

I just went through the game again, going slowly this time, and I didn't notice number 2 at all. Can you be more specific about what you're referring to? As for number 1, there is a difference in clothing, but I don't think it's problematic, since it just reflects the differences in style that black and white people tend to adopt in the real world. For instance, compare the pics of white guys in shorts and t-shirts with the pics of black guys in shorts and t-shirts: the black guys are wearing baggier shirts and longer shorts, because that's the kind of style most youngish black guys actually choose when they wear shorts and t-shirts. If a player associates baggy clothes, hoodies, etc. with criminals, what that really means is they associate the styles black people wear with criminals, which sounds an awful lot like simply associating black people with criminals and blaming it on the clothes.

Several images of a white individual with the revolver have it held in such a way that you can easily mistake it for the silver beer can. Likewise, several images of a black individual with a cellphone have it held as if the antenna is being used as a pointer.

Except that style of dress is not exclusively black. It's also pretty common to young white kids who are criminals, who live in predominantly black areas, who glorify criminals, or who know it makes their parents angry.

The reason that most people associate that dress with young black men and criminals is that it originated with young black gang members, who are almost all criminals, and who represent a disproportionate number of black youth. This in turn is because blacks are more likely to live in poor, urban, high crime areas and grow up learning that criminal behavior is their lot in life.

I didn't look closely enough at the races to see. Like I said, my reflexes are not all that fast as you can see from my results (all my point loss was from busting the time limit), and my habit is to look at the hands anyhow.

That said, I found a number of the body postures totally bizarre for the object being held, and I didn't notice whether those were black or white subjects. I think that is what Khross was trying to say; the fashion in which the white subjects hold guns and black subjects hold harmless objects is conducive to wrong decisions in those cases. A guy taking one knee while holding a cell phone pointed down at the floor like a gun.. that's pretty clearly intended to trick you as very few people would ever hold a phone like that.
